View Full Version : Check Those Mouser Orders!

On my last Mouser order I ordered 50 .047µF capacitors and what I got was 51 .033µF capacitors. I verified that the sticker on the bag was correct but the contents were not. So the moral of the story is make sure that you check your parts and not just rely on what it says on the bag.

One of the nice things about Mouser is that they will sell you small quantities of individual components, but this does probably lead to more human error because someone has to count those parts and bag them. I'm not really knocking Mouser here...I have ordered lots of stuff from them and this is the first mistake that I've ever seen.

Don:

I've been keeping a list of, um, irritations that I have encountered when ordering electronic components on-line. This posting gives me a reason to let go.

Here they are:

When moving a Mouser project to the order cart, take note that while the alert box says that it is adding quantities of specific items that are already in the cart, this feature is not currently working.

For example, if Project A needs eight, six-pin IC sockets (Mouser #517-1-390261-1) and Project B needs six, six-pin IC sockets (same Mouser number) and you put them into the shopping cart in that sequence, you'll get only six items in the cart.

If you build up the order as a project, though, the counts are correct. You then just order the project "times one."

===========================

Before you press that "order" button, be sure to double-check that all items are available for shipping immediately. I once didn't notice that a single fuse was back-ordered and found, first, that it didn't arrive with the shipment, and second, that I paid $7 to have a 20-cent fuse delivered by itself.

===========================

Since you've built the order as a project and if it is at all complex -- and you have the time -- be sure to take the opportunity to review the project/order at a later date.

Double-check that all items are in the order and that the quantities ordered are correct.

===========================

When the order arrives, use the shipping manifest as a check-off list to make sure everything you ordered arrived. Unfortunately, this means opening the opaque packages and counting individual items.

In my rather limited experience of fewer than a dozen Mouser orders, I've been shorted quantities of items such as TRIACs, optocouplers, modular jacks, IC sockets and fuses. In the case of a header pin, the baggie arrived empty. I've had no problem getting the company to reship the item, but if you're a "just-in-time" builder like me, being short a TRIAC or an opto means the item you're building isn't going to be finished when you thought it was.

============================

Whew. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

I was shorted some LEDs by them once. I think they weigh them and "guess". It was no problem emailling them and the shipped ASAP.

I have been ordering from Mouser for several years now, long before I started any blinky stuff. I have probably placed over a hundred orders with them, and this is the first mistake that I've ever caught other than an occasional incorrect quantity (which has always been high). I called them about the error and they are sending the correct part. They said to just keep the .033µF caps that were sent by mistake. I have had way more trouble with Jameco and DigiKey than Mouser. Maybe I'm just lucky.
