Best Wire Type/Size

I am thinking about making some large snowflakes and other things for my rooftop. I am going to purchase a small welder to do this. My question is what size and type of wire to get to make this sort of thing?

Most folks use 1/4" hot rolled steel. It is more maleable than the cold rolled. Good luck!
