Since I will only be using the front side of the P10 enclosure to display the "tune to info".
I'm thinking that 2 panels would be enough since I'm only going to use one side of the enclosure. I was going to use 4 panels, but thats when I was thinking of doing both sides.
What do you guys think? Is two enough? What size did you use? Thanks

BTW: Since I got you here,I plan on using a few WS2811 pixels, probably 6-10 pixels total for some effect. Whats the best route to take on this? E6804 maybe?

mine was 3w x 4t.

e6804 or pi cap with pi

Yeah, mine is 3w x 4t also. I just want to make another sign just for the purpose of the "info" since I have video playing on the 3w x 4t.
Didn't think of the pi cap, thanks.

I went with a one-side 2X2. No scrolling needed. Actually, I do not like scrolling....takes away from the show
I also briefly tell what song is playing (Song Name shortened)

I use 3W and 2H.
My plan was to use just for Tune to, but I used it for matrix faces and such and some video. I am only 50 feet from road so size of it is not an issue.
To run it I use one of RonP's 16 universe controllers. This thing has been a rock and last year was my 3rd year with it, no issues whatsoever.

Hi:
I have been working on "Tune To" signs for awhile. My first attempt was to use an old "Marlboro" Moving Message sign, which had programmable messages. I modified the internal EPROM but was never able to program the thing remotely. I have the remote keypad and can program in any message I want, but not from Vixen or an Arduino. Yet. I'm still working on it!!!

So, I have decided to use 12 MAX7219 8x8 matrix display modules which are available on Ebay and others.

I have two of these strips (12 modules each). They display very well and even though they are only 1.3" square, they are plainly visible and readable at 15 to 20 feet. This surprised me, too!

The display container will be using an Infinity Mirror made to fit the modules. Infinity Mirrors are great inventions and should show off the sign spectacularly.

I have done extensive experimenting using Arduino Nanos, MD_72XX and MD_Parola libraries and have had very positive results.

I will try to post some pics, etc as the project progresses.

I am just in the process of creating mine for this year. I also thought 2 would be a good start for one side only. After getting the panels (which are P6, roughly 7.5 in. square, 32 x 32), I don't think 2 is enough. I ordered 2 more with the intention of making it a 1 x 4.

Not sure how this will work, but I am going to try to do something like 20 nodes wide x 5 nodes height in a really basic tune-to sign. Will be a pretty basic DIY setup using PVC and Boscoyo strips.

Now that I see what my other matrix looks like,I also think 1x4 would be better.

Mine is only 50 ft from the street.. a 3x3 was plenty large enough..
Not enough for video, but text and simple images worked great.

Mine is 3x2 P10, looking into switching it to P5's this year.

THAT is a lovely sign !
What is the motivation for moving to P5? Will the P5's appear more 'high def' ?

Sorry I just don't get the use of P5 or P6. For that size matrix why not just use a cheap 32 inch or larger LED monitor.

Did 1x2 as my first lightening season this year. About 50' to the street and everyone said they could read it. Thinking of going 2x2 and no scrolling next year.

I used a single P5 panel (64*32 leds) and put it close to the front of the yard. Matrix, power supply, Pi Zero W, and Pi Martix Adapter in the enclosure behind the panel. Seemed to work well enough this year. Did some effects on the panel just because I could :)

Any special insights on using the pi zero vs. a regular pi?
Using a zero could save a lot of money.
Did you try using a zero with more than one P5 panel?

I flipped my 3x2 P10 sign (exactly like that video) from P10's to P5's this year. The swap is easy as the P10's are the exact same physical size as the P10's so the existing enclosure could be used without modifications.

The main reason was for the increased definition of fonts, particularly for Halloween. For Halloween, I like to use the fonts that look like blood dripping (Shlop, ) or other (Gypsy Curse) and they never looked good on the P10. With the P5's they looked great. Likewise for script based fonts. I use "Brush Script MT" to put "Happy Holidays!" at Christmas and it didn't look very good on the P10's. With the P10's, I generally ended up sticking with San-serif type fonts (Gil Sans mostly), but the P5's opened up a bunch of options.

Nothing much, just dedicated the Pi Zero W to running the matrix. Had to solder on the headers and used a beta version of FPP to get the built in wi-fi working. I only had the one panel, but being a P5 64*32, I think that's the same number of leds as 4 P10's.

My plan is to have a dedicated "Tune To" sign that is darn near copied from CanispaterChristmas on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15WrUKbN8Es

1x2, using 2 sides, for a total of 4 panels. I won't be using a Falcon controller and will hopefully be using a BBB tied to a Pi 3.

I really like your sign, especially the 2x2 size. I have been reading on pixel matrix signs. What I donít understand is what does the Raspberry Pi and Pi matrix adapter for? I am running Vixen V3 with an AP and ESPís for all my Renards, Wireless SSRís, and ESPixelPops. Canít I just do all this in the Vixen sequence?
