I have spent the better part of today reading about FPP & audio issues with the Vast FM212 & the Raspberry Pi, and then I have also read that there are issues with FPP with the BBB where RDS is an issue.

Can someone provide some definitive information on this?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I would be interested as well as this is my first year using the Pi and FPP. I have tested the Vast with the Pi and have come across any audio issues is this issue a random one that pops up during a show.

For reference this is the thread where I found the latest information.

Would love someone with some experience here. http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php?topic=1562.30

In addition to your request for information, I have been seen in passing that a $6 eBay USB transmitter works well with the Pi. Where can I get more information about using that setup?

Tom,

Most of the information that I gathered was found on the FPP forums

These are the transmitters that you are referring to,

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-FM-Transmitter-Module-DSP-PLL-Wireless-Stereo-Microphone-87-108MHz-/181699841096?hash=item2a4e278c48:g:DZUAAOSwrklVEn8 w

they connect to your PC or Pi via USB (and are powered over USB) and they install as an additional Sound Device "CD002" you only have to select it as the default playback device and set your frequency. Don't forget to add an antenna too

You can search for them and get many hits (https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.X+%09100mW +DSP+FM+Transmitter.TRS0&_nkw=+%09100mW+DSP+FM+Transmitter&_sacat=0), maybe even be able to find a stateside supplier (but will still probably come from China). One suggestion I will give, don't necessarily go for the cheapest, I did that when ordering a backup and none of my PCs nor the Pi recognized it as a sound device

You can also power them w 3-5v contact points on the back of the board.

Any tips on the antenna? Does the antenna need to be "Tuned" to my frequency by changing the length? How long of an antenna is needed?

Any tips on the antenna? Does the antenna need to be "Tuned" to my frequency by changing the length? How long of an antenna is needed?I just used a 75cm piece of wire as recommended in the details. 1st I just had a piece from a cat5 cable then changed to 12awg piece for the show. Others have connected a dipole or a simple telescoping antenna. You could probably calculate the exact length and that may help.

How did you connect the 12awg to the tiny hole and pad for the Antenna connection?

How did you connect the 12awg to the tiny hole and pad for the Antenna connection?Left a 1/2 inch or so of the cat5 and wrapped that around the 12awg and soldered it in place

Focusedonsound,

Sorry to have Hijacked the thread. I am still interested in hearing the current state of issues with the VAST FM212 and both the PI and BBB.

I've used the FM212 with my BBB for the last 3 years and have been very happy with it. However, I don't really rely on the RDS part of it. I set up the RDS stuff and power output and stuff from Windows when I first got it and haven't messed with it since. It broadcasts a station ID of "Kulp Lights" which is fine for me. I don't really need the song/artist stuff added. At some point, I might look at it more on my image of the BBB, but it's been low priority. Other BBB enhancements have taken priority.

I did not have any issues on either Pi or BBB versions with my 212 in tests this week, although I also have static RDS info set up in the UI. Biggest issue on the BBB was the corrupted file from which FPP draws the audio output info, and a quick delete and reboot fixed it.
