View Full Version : Pixels vs led's for wireframes

I'm sure this has been discussed before.

Why are leds so expensive?! To me, it seems cheaper to run pixels. The lights(pixels) are cheaper, I don't need to buy different colored lights or covers. And I can control them with my show easily with my existing controllers.

I guess I thought led strands would of been cheaper these days.

i have come to the realization, that once you get past the hardware, controller, pwr supply, enclosure setup, then yes it is cheaper to buy pixels. but if you don't have all of the above in place, pixels can get really expensive.

I guess that's the difference - I do have all that in place - I was just looking for the traditional look of wireframes,... but I guess for the price, I'm going with pixels. Tradition meets tech I suppose

Also, LED's with colored caps (which is what I did) is a lot easier to install and place about your yard. They seem to go bad less often, and aren't as time consuming to replace (IMO). That said, my only pixels are a matrix, so it isn't like I am using pixels all over the place.

i have alot of AC channels to use as well as alot of led strings. so deploy a mixture of both. my house is smart with pixels and my yard is dumb with AC lights. having a corner lot, long runs of a/c is alot more forgiving than long runs of data and pwr injection.

I've never run controlled ac lights. So to do that would be a little investment. I was just gonna stick the wireframes out in the yard with no control... but with the price of the lights(leds)... I'm going with pixels.

The one variable that has not been mentioned so far is the clips to mount the pixels. They cost around $.20 each vs. $.03 each for LED clips in the same qty.

I used the 1/4 clips with a small wire tie. Time consuming but effective.

While LED strands at full price can get pricey if you plan ahead and grab a bunch when they are on sale after Christmas then they are super cheap.

The day after Christmas I buy what I want to add to my display for the next year. When things start getting to 75%-90% off I start buying LED strands just to have because when they are that cheap its better to have them as a back up. At the end of 2015 I got 50 count LED strings for $0.74 a piece. But at the end of 2016 I think the cheapest I could find was 50 count for around $1.75-$2.

That's pretty good score when they're that cheap. I only use leds in the yard animals and critters, and no controllers for those. So that's all I use them for... as they lights fail, I switch them out to pixels.

This is my first wireframe year... wanted to bring back in some nostalgia- but they're being lit with pixels... so, mixing the old with the new I guess.... same with some new blowmolds I picked up... lighting with pixels...

Here's one of my Mickey heads I made last year with 1/4 clips and 4" zip ties. The clips stretch to fit the pixel and ziptie keeps them from popping out.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170905/49d3ed85dc6ffb38850fbe058256bef7.jpg
