When there is a link that says access the archives by clicking here and then it takes you to the computer christmas site (for example) it should open in a NEW window so that you don't lose your place here.

You can set that up in your browser for clicked links to open in new windows or tabs.
Or <right> choose "open in new tab" or "open in new window"

You can also right click and choose “Open in new window”.
There is a way to force this in the link though.

Yup, Jayson's code is correct, but I thought using BBCode url tag:
www.computerchristmas.com
would open in a new window by default...
Yes, I just checked, with Firefox the above link opens in a new tab.
Checked in IE6, I get a new window.
Looks like BBCode will do it for ya!
