View Full Version : Ren-T (The transformer board) COOP 'out of stock'
Wayne J

Now that the Renard64 is on it's way into our displays, here is the coop for the Ren-T. I have posted all the files needed if home etching is an option for you. If not, then you can get them from this coop.
"How many will I need?" you ask...
1 Ren-T for multiple Renard 64's with PWM firmware and status LEDs installed, but you need to get the 5 volts from another source. It is only providing the ZC
1 Ren-T per 2 Renard 64's with the non-PWM firmware with or without status LEDs and no need for an alternate power supply.
The parts list, assembly, ect., ect. is here.....
http://www.christmasinshirley.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=477
Important note on the Tamura transformer.
During testing and troubleshooting of the Ren-C, it has been found that non-center tapped transformers (Tamura unit) does not provide reliable Zero Cross and should not be used. A Center Tap transformer needs to be used, such as the Xicon 41PG300 listed in the BOM. The BOM and assembly notes have been modified for this change, as well as the WIKI.
Also, the Radio Shack transformer SKU# 273-1365 is a nice part for this application.

The speaker shouts: Hi, Welcome to Wayne's drive through, may I take your order please.
"Yes please. I would like 3 Ren-T's please."
The shouting speaker: Would you like to super size those T's?
No thank you. Just regular is fine.
The moral of the story is I would like 3 T's please.

Jeff lands in the parking lot... walks up to the window and yells into the speaker "YEP, TWO!" walks back to his ship a flys away to a place high above a bunch of blinkin' lights...
(He loves those things)
Moral: Yep, two!

We are now over the 25 count mark, this should bring the boards to the $4.00 - $5.00 range.

Wayne,
Since one Ren-T powers two Renard 64's, I'm in need of two (2) Ren-T boards - do you have any left to sell? If so, what is the price/unit?

David,
the definate price is not know yet, waiting on a board count. Estimate is close to $4.00 ea. Everything that is known is in the first post.
I'm gonna let this run for at least another week before I send the order in.

Crap! I just noticed this note and it shipped today so I couldn't stop it. There's a new paperweight on my workbench.

Darn, I had hoped that everyone had seen that message, and hadn't order the transformer.
Anyway, there is a way with two cuts and two jumpers on the Ren-T board to allow that transformer to be used. I'll come up with instructions later on how to use it, if anyone wants to do it.

The Ren-C gets 'power' from the 595 board, but still needs ZC and one Ren-T will easily provide this for the amount of boards you can put on one port.

Or one REN-T with that transformer could be used for "power" and another REN-T without that transformer could be used for the ZC'ing then?

No. A fully loaded Renard 64 with PWM firmware requires 1 amp of current. That transformer is not capable of that.

Thank you Phil, but I ordered three of the other transformers today. I can send the Tamura back, but it's not worth the shipping cost. I've been working overtime trying to make some $ to fund this year's electric bill. I'm sure $6 isn't bad for a technical looking paperweight...

Ok. Then now I'm confused once again, just after I had gotten my bearings on the whole REN64 project.
If a fully loaded Renard 64 with the PWM firmware requires 1amp of current and the only recommended transformer (now) is the 41PG300 which is only 1/3 amp (maybe it was .6 amp either way its not 1 amp) then... what has to be done?

I've been recommending in this case that power be provided from an external regulated 5V supply (such as a PC power supply), and that the Ren-T be used for just the zero-crossing.

Ok, I can salvage a PC power supply. Since the +5v of a PC has decent amperage supply, could one PC power supply be used for the ZC of two (or more) REN64's then Phil?
P. Short
09-07-2007, 01:59 AM
The Ren-T is used for the zero-crossing (ZC), and the PC power supply is used for power.
So I'm not sure what you're asking.
Basically, use one Ren-T per serial port on your PC (usually for one or two Ren64 boards), and one PC power supply should be able to handle several Ren64 boards.

Got my board and parts today. Finished the assembly and was able to get a blinking light on the Ren-C board. Just need to get a straight thru serial cable to see if I can get a signal to the 595 board now.
I have tried using DB9 to RJ45's on both ends but I get an error from Vixen 2.0 saying it can't open the com port.

Now that everyone is assembling the boards, if we have any questions on assembly or operation, there is a thread in the Renard forum for the Ren-T. Posting everything there will keep info from getting spread out in different locations.

No, not needed. It was made that way to look like the home etch version, but the via's make the contact, so don't add the wire jumpers. ;)
