A common theme on this board is to use sockets for all ICs. This is to avoid excess heat in the IC or PIC Chip and if something goes wrong you can get it out easily.
Until recently I have always used my fingers or a screw driver to pop out the IC from the socket. However after bending the pins and many failed attempts to get the IC out of the socket I finally got an IC Extractors for $1.50. Cheap and a lot safer for the IC's PINs. The extractor fits under the end of the IC and you then pull it straight out evenly.
