For years (I am only 29, soldering since 12 yrs old) I never worried about the smoke from the soldering iron work, I tried to work mostly in open spaces. However when I setup my recent workshop in a spare bedroom, I found that I couldn't deal with the fumes even with the windows open and fan running.

I picked up a decent fume extractor made by Weller for $47. It has a decent fan that draws the smoke from your work through an active carbon filter. This is a must if you have a ventilation problem!!

Be sure to get an extra set of filters (3 pack).

Cons -
It is now lower then my vise grip setup so I have to put it up a few inches on top of a storage box. I might be looking at one on an arm that is adjustable.

Here is a DIY setup
