I started last years build with one of those $5 third hands with alligator clips and a magnifying glass. Thought it would be great, but it wasn't. The alligator clips scratch the boards and the magnifying glass just got int the way. Also it didn't have enough weight so I taped it down a bunch of times. In the end I quit using it and just taped down the board.

Recently I bought a more expense ($75) but much much easier to use PanaVise brand "Electronic Work Center". Panavise has a series of products that work together and interchange with each other.

The Electronic work center has two adjustable arms about 6" long and will open to about 13" wide. It also has a quick release. Building the SSRs I set the width and with the quick release popped the boards in and out quick as I added components. Also it adjusts in many directions.
PanaVise has just components so you can get the same kind of adjustable holder as the work center but with a suction base. Also I can get different holders for the work center.
I was concerned about the cost, but after only a couple hours of use I really liked it. The solder spool holder is nice and the solder iron rest is useful to.
