The Christmas season runs from evening prayer I of Christmas until the Sunday after Epiphany or after 6 January, inclusive, this year.

Does anyone run their shows this long?

Ditto here - although we don't have Thanksgiving in Oz :). Tweeking in last week of Nov with "proper" show running from 1 December through to 31st.

I read an article online at the start of the year about how people are running their lights into January, even as late as February or March. The common reason being "for the kids" - people either having kids or in a neighbourhood with lots of youngins. They wanted to carry on the magical feeling of Christmas and the fairy lights a little longer.

I sort of match Toodles. Last weekend of November and rip it all down on Jan 1. I used to go through to the 6th of January but it really felt like I was pushing it and also I had lost the will to do a burnt out bulb check every couple of days.

This year I am planning to take a couple of days off work for the setup, depending if I have to do the in-laws or not.

The first known electrically-illuminated Christmas tree was the creation of Edward H. Johnson, an associate of inventor Thomas Edison. While he was vice president of the Edison Electric Light Company, a predecessor of today's Con Edison electric utility, he had Christmas tree light bulbs especially made for him. He proudly displayed his Christmas tree, which was hand-wired with 80 red, white and blue electric incandescent light bulbs the size of walnuts, on December 22, 1882 at his home on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

My lights are on from the dinner hour on Thanksgiving , until "Little Christmas" , which , is also , my birthday . ( Jan 6th )
We kinda make it like Chevy Chase , where the lights are lit up , before Turkey dinner ( which we usually try and have by 3 pm )

I usually set them to turn on while we're at my aunt's house for Thanksgiving, and we come home to a winter wonderland. This year we'll be lighting up Wednesday night before Turkey Day, so the boys can see them before we head out of town for the weekend. My last night is Jan. 1. One of the biggest displays in town usually has theirs down by Dec 26, 27th at the latest, and I think that's really annoying. But with utility costs being what they've become, I imagine we'll see a lot more of that this year. :(

I have been running from the day after thanksgiving, to typically January 1st.

I always do the takedown - since I'm typically off work on the first - which makes it a great day to take things down.

Mine are on from Thanksgiving until Jan 7th. The 7th was my mother's birthday and she would never let the lights go off until then. I do it in honor of her.

I intend to go from Thanksgiving to January 4. I figured I'd let it go one more weekend after the 1st.

I'm not sure why, but people in my community tend to run their shows much later usual. A lot of them run through the second or third week, or even the end of January. There is one house on my street that was on through most of February! He didn't stop until several neighbors complained at City Hall, and our councilman convinced him to turn it off. Unfortunately, it wasn't a very nice show to look at anyway. He had zillions of lights that were just haphazardly thrown everywhere. It was a little bit like looking directly into the Sun. Oh well, he probably thought it looked good. Actually, my father-in-law liked it, because he is nearly blind, and he can barely see anything with most displays, but he said this guy's house looked like it was a huge ball of fire to him.

Mine get powered up in the last week of November for tweaking, but run from Dec 1 to Dec 30th this year (Not on for new years this year). That will give me 3 days to pull them down this year before I have to return to work :)

I light'em up Thanksgiving and run until at least Jan 7th (my birthday) which is also Russian Orthodox Christmas, so I make sure my one display runs for two Christmases.

Good for you, Brian. That was my point originally. Christmas really is a season and it doesn't end at Christmas.
