Light string alterations

found some light strings on Ebay and am planning on altering the strings so I can place a partial string in one candy cane and another partial string in two or three other candy canes.
Plan is, using a 500 bulb string of clear lights and several of same in red so I can get the canes to chase up or down (sounds doable?)
have one voltage input (110v) from ssr to each string but the strings are cut into seperate (physicaly) sections with one ssr connect (will act as a 500 bulb string as each section is connected (daisy chained) using longer interconnect wires.
found 500 bulb strings for $8

I know it's not the day after Christmas sales but these are commercial lights (most of them)
The sales man on other end of landline gave me a break on the 55 light sets, 50 light sets as well as the 100 light string sets.
