I have quite a few SSR's housed in the blue carlon two gang outlet boxes. I'd like to make them black so they blend in a little more. Has anyone ever painted these? What kind of paint would be best, considering that they're plastic and that they'll be in the cold?

I have been using the cheapo .99 cent cans of paint. It works well, but chips off if it is scraped or banged around. There is spray paint made just for plastic, though it is pricey. Krylon makes it.

There is paint that's made especially for plastic. I have seen both Rust-Oleum and Krylon plastic paint at Home Depot and Lowes.

I guess a few chips aren't a big deal, and my SSR's aren't handled all that much anyway. Cheap stuff it is, unless I can find the plastic stuff cheap.

I'm using 4" water drain pipe for my enclosurers, which is also plastic. I sand the plastic and use regular paint that I get at Home Depot (Oops paint) for a $1. By giving the plastic some tooth with the sand paper, I have not had any chipping. It will scratch off if the plastic is scraped.

I just use a black plastic bag - put the ssr inside and ziptie the open end shut. I would not want to leave them uncovered.

What kind / size of black bag? I have been using freezer bags and they are clear and would like to use black ones.

Well I guess I haven't really looked around for any lately...I got some last year after Halloween. They are about 2 gallons in size. They work perfect.

Then there is my ultimate SSR enclosure. It costs about $6.00 but you get 5 quarts of Ice Cream with it.

Go to your neighborhood auto parts store and pick up a can of black vinyl spray paint it will work very well on plastic and is only about 3.50 a can. Also works well on orange extension cords since they are vinyl.

The key is to wipe the plastic with lacquer thinner to remove gloss and dirt, then spray away.
Good luck!

I spray my enclosures black. If they are rain tight that is all I do, if they are not rain tight I slip a freezer bag over them secured with a rubber band.

I just use a black plastic bag - put the ssr inside and ziptie the open end shut.I used a black plastic table cloth that I found at a party store. It’s the kind for “Over the hill” birthdays. It was something like a buck for this huge sheet. I cut it up into 2 foot square sheets and wrapped it around the SSR and secured it loosely with a tie wrap. It must have cost less the 10¢ to do.
