I need to know how to build a timer that can be triggered on and will stay on for x seconds. This needs to be a standalone device that will work with a PIR, Mat Switch, etc...
Any suggestions or is this to vague?

Look up the datasheet for the LM555 (any one of a huge number of other parts ending in '555'). There are other solutions using PICs or parts like the MC14541, but the 555 is often the best choice.

The 555 timer can be purchased at Radio Shack for a few dollars.
BTW this all sounds like Halloween stuff. If so you may want to post in there to for the benefit of others.

it is for Halloween, but I figured this was the place to post for hardware help. Once I get it all done I will post it in the Halloween forum along with some other stuff i'm working on.
Thanks.
teberle; Here is some good info on the 555 timer I dug up for the Phily Mini. Hope it helps. AI
