View Full Version : Looking to setup a RGB pixel matrix next year - Questions

I would like to setup a RGB LED pixel video display next year. I currently only have an old LOR dimmer and software so I need some new hardware/software combo suggestions.

Hardware wise, I am looking at ~1000 WS2811 pixels (2 uni's), but I need to know what controller I should use.?

Also, what software? Will I need a computer/pi to run it? (used to run my LOR in standalone)

I want the software to be able to map pixels so that I can:
1. Scroll text (configuarable)
2. Scroll standard (possibily built-in) christmas pictures such as a wreath, bells, etc.
3. Show a video from a video file (low res of course, I realize that).
4. All while synced to music.

Any suggestions of what I should use would be great!

I would recommend the E682 for a controller. Several other options but lots of people use it here for your support. Nutcracker/Xlights will be your effects generator. It will be a player if you want to use the Pi. You can still sequence with LOR or switch to Vixen, HLS, LSP.

I used 8 universes and 2 outputs of a E6804 and HLS and Nutcracker with 1200 of 2811 pixabulbs for my side fence that's 6' by 90' with power injected around every 200 or so pixels. Not dense enough for pictures but text shows up pretty well as long as I pick the right font. Text is better in the end of the second video
