View Full Version : Channel order

Hello everyone...
I have a question about channel order....
If I create a profile with a channel in a certain location....let's say that channel "frosty" is number 5 out of 80....and I'm running Renard 16's....
Later I decide that it's too hard to edit "frosty" at number 5 and I decide to move him down the list so as to put him with a channel that is similar and can be edited easier by having the two close to each other in the channel lineup....
I place "frosty" at position 17....
In the original configuration channel 5 was assigned to the first Renard 16.....Here's my question....since I moved "frosty" to position 17 in my configuration list does he 'fire' from the first Renard 16 on channel #5 as the original profile had him or does he 'fire' from the second Renard 16 on channel #1 since I moved him down the list?
Thanks....

SC,
He will fire from whatever channel he is assigned to in the profile you are using on that sequence. If he is #5 he will be channel 5 on the first controller, if he is #17, he will fire from the first channel of the second controller. I hope I understood your question correctly.

If you physically moved "frosty" to channel 17 then it will fire from the second Ren. If you only reordered the channel in the profile, it is still on Channel 5 and will fire with the first Ren. A re-order in a profile only changes the appearance of the channel in Vixen.

If I go to Edit a Profile....click "channel order"...select "define new order"...then click on "frosty" and drag him from channel 5 to channel 17....
Is that what you call "Physically moved" or is that what you called "reorder"?
Does he now fire from Ren 1 or Ren 2?
Thanks...

SC, that is considered "Reordering" and he still fires from Ren 1. That is a very easy way to move your channels around for sequencing ease without changing any hookups on the controllers. I have done that extensively on my primary profile. (Physically moved would be if you plug him in to a different controller)

Thanks rstehle....
How do you "plug" him into a different controller.....
Also...once you reorder is there a way to remember where the original position was? Would that be "restore natural order?"
I reordered one of my profiles a long time back and frankly don't remember where "frosty" was located then....

SC,
Yes, you would "restore natural order". Natural order is the way the channels line up in numerical order by controller.
Plugging into a different controller means literaly that, moving his plug from one controller to another. :p

Whew....that's a relief....I was having visions of sugar plum bombs dance in my head as I tried to figure out which things came from where after having moved several to different locations....
Thanks for the clarification...

Warning - I am not 100% sure that I know what I am talking about here, so please don't take the following as an offical how-to. This is just my understanding of some of the Vixen channel order functions. If I am incorrect, please let me know, and I will remove this so I don't confuse others.
In the profile set-up in Vixen, there are two different places that I found that you can reorder channels. The first, which you guys seems to be talking about above, is on the right side of the list of channels on the profile page. My understanding is that can be used for sequencing only. You can move around channels to any order to make it easier to sequence, and can have as many different orders as you need to make your life easier. By default, these are named Channel 1, 2, 3, etc, but you can change it to anything you want, like "Frosty" above. As you guys indicated above, this is what you would use to the sequencing.
However, on the left of the list of channel is the profile editor, there are 3 little buttons, the top of which also brings up a screen that looks like the channel order. My very limited understanding, is that this is the physical output channel order. If you were to move Frosty from the 5th position here to the 17th position here, it would fire from the 2nd REN16 (if it is using channels 17-32). You wouldn't want to change this for sequencing purposes, from what I can tell. You'd only want to move it if, you realized you needed to put some lights in a different postion, and it was better to have it on a different controller.
That is all probably very confusing. But the way I found that you can keep track is in the sequencing, all of the channel names are listed on the left side, with the on/off/dimming to the right. If you right click on the channel name, you can toggle on/off the channel output number (what I think you guys were calling the physical channel in your posts). Doing this can help you to keep track of if you are just moving "Frosty" around to make sequencing easier, or if for some reason, you've moved him to fire from a different controller.
Again, if this doesn't seem correct to a seasoned (pun intended) user of Vixen, please let me know.

Wow ... I sure hope it is the way deplanche said , cause that is also what I did and have not physically tested it yet .

deplanche....
Thanks for the heads up on the list on the left....hadn't found that....sooooo, when you "toggle channel outputs..." it gives you the actual order in which they fire? If so, then that's good to know.....easy to check....

Yes. When you toggle, it shows what channel each channel will output to. So, if channel "Frosty" is on channel 5, it will show a #5, regardless on where it is located on the sequencing window. You can put it in the top row of the sequencing window or the last row, and the #5 will still be there.
