View Full Version : Free computer anyone?

OK first off. No guarantees, yet. I am just trying to see if there is interest. I am going to be pulling 13 computers out of a lab tomorrow (Thurs) and their plan is to scrap them.
I was going to grab one or so for myself. Is anyone else interested? They are Celeron's with 512 megs of RAM, CD drive and probably a 20 gig hard drive in a smaller tower case (white). I don't mind doing some swapping around if people only wanted power supply etc. I could move the RAM about. They are requiring me to format the Hard drives but I think there is the XP COA on the case.
I have no idea what it would cost to ship them out but I would have to figure something out for a box etc. I think I could use the boxes the new computers come in.
Just to be fair one each and again I cant promise anything as they may not want to give them to me.

Ok. Update. I was a little off on the Specs. Both good and bad.. They are Celeron 2.4 ghz, only 256 megs of RAM but they have 40 gig Hard drives! There is no COA sticker on them and the drives are wiped.
Looks like I am going to get about 9 systems. They wanted to use some in other places and are having me steal RAM from some to make some run reasonable under XP. So, I think that there is at least that many replys already. Ill just start at the top and work my way down the list. Sorry I cant think of a better way for right now. Ill be gone this weekend so I wont even touch them till next week sometime and have to wait for the new computers to come in so I have boxes etc. So, Just please Stand by and Ill get more info out as it comes.
Ill keep any extra powersupplys to fulfill those requests. (one the ones I steal the RAM).
PS. if anyone near the top is scared by the 256 megs and doesnt want one let me know and Ill skip you.

From the Motherboard specs.
http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d845gvsr/
• 2.5 V (only) 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMMs with gold-plated contacts
• Unbuffered single-sided or double-sided DIMMs
• Maximum total system memory: 2 GB; minimum total system memory: 64 MB
• DDR266/200 MHz SDRAM DIMMs only
They are at BIOS P10 and there is driver downloads on that webpage so keep that in mind when you are trying to install Windows etc.

Just making sure it is clear that I'd only want a power supply if it is available. No need to strip a good PC to give me the power supply.

Greg,
I'd be up for one complete machine if you can get one.

Do these computers come with monitors? If so, are they flat panel displays or CRT's. If they are CRT monitors, I'll only be interested in the computer and not the monitor. The CRT monitors would cost more to ship than they are worth.

Craiglist score:
I just scored 3 more free computers from my craigslist adds. This time it was a lawyers office. Two Pentium 3's and a Pentium 4 2 120 gig hard drives and a 180 in the 4. Two LCD monitors (17 inch, they upgraded to 21's) They wanted the hard drives cleaned and didn't want to pay Venture Computers the $250 they wanted to wipe the hard drives. So that was the deal, I come wipe the hard drives on these three and two more somebody was taking home and I could have the whole lot. XP installed on all 5 and everything worked first time out.
Best score I think I ever made from my "FreeCycle your Computer" adds I run.

Has anyone done the calculations of what these cost to ship. My guess is at least two maybe three boxes? Insured?
Curious minds want to know.

Hi Everyone,
Ok sorry for the slower update. I have the computers. I have keyboards, Mice (nice optical), speakers and 2 power cords (1 from the monitor). I don't think I will have enough of all the accessories for everyone but will deal with that later.
Next I am trying to work on shipping. I just got the new computers yesterday and now have boxes. I could try and send it in the Monitor box but that would leave pretty much no room for padding. The CPU box is a better fit. I put everything and some padding into one and it weighed in at 32#. Its a 22" X 22" X 14" box. According to the USPS website sending parcel post would be about $37 from California to New York City. The smaller box with no padding is about $31 I dont think the $6 is worth the risk honestly.
If you are still interested send me a PM with your Name and Address so I can start packaging.
I do not know exactly how many I have as of yet but should have at least 9. They are having me pull RAM out of some to give to one's they are going to keep using. So Also let me know if you plan to buy more RAM and you might take one without any I may have more. Other wise I will just part them out for Power supply Hard drive etc.
Again I plan on starting at the top of the thread and working my way down but if you are interested send me a PM.

I had to do something similar at my plant about six months back. They got rid of 12 but only three or four were worth saving (which co-workers snatched up) the others were too obsolete. I tried to reinstall with the OS key that was on the computer but it didn't work. I was able to get a copy of XP PRO with key from Tech Support that does service for my company and reinstalled the drivers now I have a halfway decent computer.
Long story short, the key that you have on the computer may or may not work. Good luck in getting it up and running.

Just as a reminder. These drives are BLANK (very blank!). There is NO Windows COA/Key sticker on them.
I did run SpinRite on all the drives so they should be in reasonable condition. I make no warranty expressed or implied on the condition of the computers though.

Ok, Since I probably need to put an end Date to this I will say 1 Week from this post.
If I haven't gotten a PM By July 3rd 11AM PDT I will give your computer to the next one on the list.
I have updated the first post with "the list" and some status stuff. (Check your position I may have made a mistake let me know if I did!)
I will be using Pay Pal for shipping costs. Once I have a good idea on Shipping price Ill PM you with the info. I dont know if Pay Pal will charge me any fees but if so that would also need to be included. My wife thinks I spend too much on Christmas lights already!

Quick Update:
I need to get one of the boxes to the Post Office to have them check the postage as the web tool says "Additional postage may apply" what this means I have no idea. But for now looks like it should be less than $40 for pretty much everyone with Pay Pal fees etc. Assuming they don't add much at the Post Office.
I am also waiting to get at least Zip codes from everyone so I can have them check all the pricing when I go. Again Ill give people until the 3rd to get me a PM with their intentions. I am sure they are going to LOVE me for that!
Thanks for the patience. I hope to get this out the door soon. (Course my wife hopes I get the deck finished!)

PS. I updated the first post to reflect all PM's received.

I did not send anything to those asking for Power Supplies. At this point I think enough people will take the computers. But that could change once people decide on shipping.

Any chance the RAM would work for these computers? There are 2 open slots in them if memory serves me correct. (Dont quote me on that yet!)

Ok Update:
I updated the first post with payments. I have 9 of 10 right now. I am printing out Shipping labels tonight and should start boxing up tomorrow. I appreciate everyone's patience. I had a weekend long wedding and plan to get a truck tomorrow to bring boxes home and start getting to the Post Office. I will have these out the door this week.
Also, I know there are payments I havent accepted. I was having problems with PayPal accepting those of you that used Credit Cards. I am going to give it a try again tonight and see if I can make it happy!

Greg unless you are a certain type of member, you won't be able to do that. I can't remember why but Moneyhunter explained it to us during the latest Ren16 CoOp. If you arent a member where that will be allowed you'll have to ask everyone who paid with credit card to pay again by using type where money comes out of their checking.
Sorry for the bad news.
Leon
EDIT - FOUND IT
Payment:
1. I can accept Paypal through my personal account. (Sorry, I cannot accept credit card payments, as I do not have a premier account.)
