Just out of curiosity, I took a Renard8 board, removed the Oscillator and the Power LED, re-programmed the PIC to use the internal oscillator and programmed it for 19200 baud, and removed the termination on the output signal. The three remaining chips on the board (PIC + regulator + RS485 chip) drew about 7 mA. This compares with 20-80 mA when the oscillator and LED are in place (depending on the firmware configuration and on the RS485 termination).
