I was curious, I have seen it mentioned but is there some firmware out there for the Renard 24 to run off DMX? I got a lynx dongle a freestyle and ordered some SSR4's and I ended up buying a 2nd dongle as backup that I wouln't mind using and make it all DMX. Is it in the works? I just wanted to make sure I didn't pass it hidden in a thread somewhere when I searched. If not what is the ETA on it? just curious........

This question is best asked in the Renard forum.

Actually DMX is RS485 :)

UUMMM NO. They are 2 different things

Thats what I was thinking. DMX and standard Renard can be RAN using RS485 (Cat5, RJ45 jack) but are 2 different things. Plus I hear there is some DMX ACN wireless going on and I would really like to get in on that. DMX seems to be able to run at a faster rate and is uses USB which is the ever growing "standard".

Actually they aren't two different things the DMX protocol travels down an RS-485 communications link. RS-485 describes the physical and the electrical characteristics of the data link. DMX describes the packetization and content of the data.

ACN is different than DMX, they are both lighting protocols but ACN is designed to run on ethernet whereas DMX is designed to run on RS-485.

DMX operates at 250K baud. Depending on the size of the packet, which is usually 512 channels, you get a 40Hz refresh rate. DMX does not communicate on USB. There are however USB to DMX converters like the DMX Pro and Open USB that can be used with Vixen.

Actually they aren't two different things ...

RS-485 is the physical hardware and DMX is the protocol. They don’t have to be used together.

You can send any two level signal over RS-485 including a hand operated switch.

You could communicate with DMX using just TTL levels.

Darn it you got me...that will teach me to simplify my answers. I opted not to go into that much detail because I felt it might confuse the issue.

You have to take the easy ones when they come.:)
They don't happen that often.

So back to the main topic. Has there been any work on a hex file for the renard controlers so that they can use dmx protocol? If not is there any plans?

As I had mentioned before this is a much better question for the Renard forum. Phil maintains all the code for Renard and doesn't really frequent this area.
