Ok so I have 3 strands of ge color effects rgbs 25 ct each.
I want to make a matrix with all the pixels as possible 8x9
I know there will be three extas so my question is
Can I start a new strand of lights in the middle of a row?
I do not want to cut and splice the the strands into only two strands and loose the three pixels cause I want to use them as a topper...
I am using lor, nutcracker, and the e604/e682
Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks

you can fold the strand with the 68x controler but starting a strand in the middle of a row i do not know i used 10 strands of 36 with 18 in each row using nut cracker and lor any smaller will limit the effects you can do and people be able to tell whats going on and on a small matrix text moves so fast its lost meaning.

IMHO, that's too small to be an effective matrix. Of you insist ... cut each string down (by 1) to 24 and fold each into 3 sections of 8,8,8. Nc can do that pattern. String1: up,down,up. String2: down,up,down. String3: up,down,up ... Last year I did a 32x32 and I'm expanding to 48x32 this year.

8x8 would allow one letter at a time or a little icon.

In nutcracker, I think we can get 5x5 but text looks so much better with at least 12 rows of lights. If you have a small matrix try the courier font

They are actually going to be on 6' trees on my porch so text will not be an issue
I will be using text on my 16' mega tree with 50 pixels per stand and I'm looking at 72 strands

Thanks

I think I have decided to cut the three pixels off and make two strands of 36 to form the 8x9 matrix per tree
In the off season I had an idea I could combine all 5 mini matrix to form one big matrix of 8x45
Just a thought....

Thanks for the replies

If you are not expecting the controller to handle the zig/zag, then starting a new string in the middle should not be a problem. Just be sure all your strings that you connect to the same cluster (E682) are the same length. In an E6804, that doesn't matter, since each output can be a different length.

Since the controller isn't doing any changes in mapping for the zig/zag or up/down direction of the string, your sequencer or NutCracker needs to handle that.

Make sense?

It does make sense and that was what I was thinking

I found that True Type fonts with the Nutcracker Text effect don't look good when they are too small. However, 5x5 or 5x7 text (block letters) is quite readable if you make a bitmap out of the letters and then display it using the Picture effect (with scrolling), rather than using the Text effect. I think the reason is because the anti-aliasing in True Type fonts obscures the letters too much.

For anyone needing example 5x5 or 5x7 bitmaps to look at to make the text bitmap, there are lots of examples of the old 5x5 or 5x7 dot matrix fonts on the web. For example:
http://www.dafont.com/5x5.font or http://www.google.com/search?q=5x5+bitmap+font&tbm=isch.
