Greetings everyone,

Is it ok to take power from the computer that is running vixen to power the 595 controllers (64ch)?

Im currently assembling my 595 controller and SSR boards from Sean & Brians co-ops. I have a computer that I will be running Vixen on. Im wondering if I can tap in to an unused power connector in that same computer and use it to power my controller also. If so, do any modifications need to be done or can I just run a red wire from the pc 5V line (red) and the ground wires directly to the controller?

The SSR's being self powered of course.

Thanks in advance,

Hutch

That's what I did to power my 595. I had a female molex connector from a "Y" connector. I used the red for +5vdc and a black. I removed the other black and yellow from the female connector.

That'll work fine as previously stated. Just watch out for an accidential short in your board somewhere- most PSU's detecting a short will just immediately shut down using their internal protection circuit, thus taking everything with it.

And that is a bad thing how.
I like the idea that a computer PSU will protect me from some of my dumber mistakes.
Having my computer shut down if I connect the power back words or have a solder bridge that creates a short is a far better outcome than destroying a plug adapter or smoking a board.

Of course the first time it happed I was a little upset because I thought I had killed my computer.
Just pressed the power switch and everything came back up.

Didn't mean it as a bad thing- but ever hit your hard reset or power button while your PC was doing some heavy crunching? Chances are you may potentially lose files or create some hard drive issues.

Obviously test before you hook these kinds of things up.

Bottom line, if you do this, know the potential pit falls.
