Not entirely if in the right forum, but its probably of interest to many of the developers, so i'll try here..
"PIC Microcontrollers - know it all ", Di Jasio et al. ISBN 978-0-7506-8615-0 2008.
This is by far, the best practical reference book for both newbie and oldhack pic developers. ITs a single comprehensive reference. Its been put together by a group of the best developers in the world. Sections include
Intro to PIC Microcontrollers
Programming PICs in Assembly, PicBasic, MBasic, and C..
It comes with a CD, with MPLAN, MPLAB Sim, MBasic complier, with heaps of source code examples..
If you only can have One book on PIC's.. THIS IS IT!! ( i have 20 or so, 10 will be on ebay shortly :-) )

I just bought one of these books and it has everything that you'll ever want to know about programming PICs. You don't necessarily need it to program the PICs used with your Christmas lights since the programs are already written. But, if you're interested in using PICs in other projects (like myself), this book is extremely useful.
After looking around on the web, the cheapest place I found was at Overstock.com. They beat everybody else's prices by more than 50%!!
$19.00 ($21.95 w/ shipping) from Overstock compared to $44.58 ($48.57 w/ shipping) for the next closest price.
Thought that I'd throw that out there for anyone that's interested.
Thanks for the letting me know about the book, mrpackethead.

I couldn't find it at Overstocked.
Edit: Removed link. MPH makes a valid point below.

I couldn't find it at Overstocked.
Here's a link to the book on Overstock (http://www.overstock.com/Books-Movies-Music-Games/Pic-Microcontrollers/2574214/product.html?searchtype=HP_Header&keywords=978-0-7506-8615-0)
After looking a little, I was able to download a pdf of it for free here (http://www.freebookspot.com/Comments.aspx?Element_ID=3440).
I hadn't thought about trying to find it for free online. If you don't mind either reading it on the computer screen or printing it out for yourself, that's an excellent idea. Thanks.

or don't mind ripping off the guys that take massive time out of their lives to publish them in the first place. Lucio is an unbeliably helpful guy, i'd just feel bad about stealing his work, and not paying the few $$$ for his work..

MPH,
Did you try any of the code samples in the book? I was trying the first one..the ping pong and all I am getting are errors with the code. I copied it right from the book, but nothing. Thanks for the advice though. Turns out I already had the ebook, just didn't get around to checking it out. It is very informative.

I have ran through a few of the sample codes. The first time through, it gave me errors too. But, following the book, it shows you how to open the error file and see what caused the error. The problem ended up being that my file name/location exceeded the maximum number of allowable characters. I just moved the folder to the C: drive and it worked.
