View Full Version : HLS crashes when creating a display group based on existing one.

When I try to create a Display Group based on existing display group (with segments in it) the HLS crashes.

How to reproduce it:
1. Go to manage channels
2. Select Channels and Assign to Display Group
3. provide name for the new display Group
4. Check "Save As a NEW Group"
5. click Modify List.

This causes HLS to crash with crashing developer report dialog.

I have just tried the same steps in an older version of HLS (couple days older) on a different project and it crashes as well.
So, it's not related to my main project neither the latest version.

Joe, can we also have HLS version number displayed in the main menu area on the right side. I am not able to tell you what version I am currently in case I report a bug.

Thank you.

With regards to version number, it's at the bottom right of the main window.

Sorry --- I find no issue with my testing.

Please make sure you are not getting click happy and doing things before HLS is ready.

You have over 10,000 channels so it takes some time to build display grids.

Since windows is event driven --- Clicking a button too early can cause an issue.

That is where most of my current debugging is ... finding the places someone can click too early and cause an issue.

Try again ... but wait for the display to present itself before you click modify.

As I stated -- it's not failing here -- so it's size/time related.

I just created a sequence with 15,000 channels.

Created a Segment with 9,000 channels

Did what you stated in your post --- all went well.

Please re-look at your post and see if you can't provide a step by step procedure to create your issue.

Thanks.

Thank you Joe.

I even tested this on mine test project with 100 channels before I posted the bug report. I ran to the same crash.

Usually before I post a bug ticket I test it on other small project to to help you out to target the root problem. (In case it's a bug tied to my outlier project - channel count)
I am a developer as well, so I know what helps during bug fixes.

I am glad you found the glitch.

Cheers.

I found a bug.

What I don't know if it was your bug.

Can you confirm you no longer have an issue.

Thanks.

Unfortunately the bug is still there:
Here are the exact steps after opening an existing sequence
Steps:

1. Go to Manage Channels
2. Select: Select Channels and Assign to Display Group
3. Select existing Group (in my case MGTree Display Group)
4. Check the box “Save as NEW Group”
5. Provide name for the new Group
6. Click Modify List
7. Crash

Here is the full zipped project (https://app.box.com/s/z1cs0sal5drucobfoblx) (100 channels) where I can reproduce it.

This procedure you are suggesting makes no logical sense , the app should crash if you do this.

Try this

open a display group

choose modify

make adjustments

choose save as and give the display group a new name .

You are right. The swapped steps don't cause the crash.
Bottom line the App should not crash and should be able to handle both approaches. Everybody things in a different way how to create other objects based on inheritance.

I dis agree and this is one time that I think a crash is expected . Joe cannot possibly have a catch in place for every user error .

Why on earth would you select modify at the end ?

That does not equate.

What are we trying to do here? Keep HLS where it is is currently or try to make it better?

Well, if everybody just stays quiet about a crash then the HLS does not move anywhere.
Then everybody can just recommend to new users: "stay away from it".
I think to be able to reproduce a crash it's a big deal to me.

Please take my statement as constructive.

If you plan to modify something this would be a first step not a last .

Save as was designed to be an end process > this should be a last step .

I can crash HLS at will if i perform procedures outside of logical sequence .

On a side note I have crash issues with Ae and they are mostly related to bone head user errors .

but one particular issue is directly related to openGL , Adobe is well aware of the issue and has done nothing to address it

Procedure errors are not bugs .

again please do not take my reply to your thread negatively , this is not my intent .

Cheers and
best of luck .

No biggie.

Procedure errors are not bugs .
If nothing happens then I agree.
If it crashes (during regular usage) I see it as a bug. (just my opinion)
I am not trying to do here any crazy things. Just trying to use the APP for sequencing. That's all.

Cheers.

My over-look.

I forgot to remove the "Modify List" button when dupping a Segment. You can not modify what has not yet been created.

Thanks for finding it.

17N fixes.

Wow, I just downloaded last night and I'm two versions behind already. Amazing!

Thanks Joe!
