I am thinking of purchasing a fm transmitter that is on sale for $99.00 (originally $229) and has a range up to 450'. The transmitter is the V6000 from mobile black box. Does anyone have any experience with this unit?

I've heard these work, but they are only MONO and of poor overall specifications. Plastic case (not metal) and don't appear to be legal for sale in the US.

From part15.us below:

Attempted disclaimer, not sure it will meet FCC requirements

At the very bottom of the terms and conditions page we see:

* MobileBlackBox.com does not advertise its products as FCC approved.
* All products are sold as experimental or hobby purposes, not for licensed broadcasting.
* User is responsible for checking local laws/regulation and to make sure product purchased complies with particular usage.
* Otherwise, they should not proceed with purchase and/or return product already purchased within 30 days for a full refund, less S&H charge.
* MobileBlackBox.com or its parent company are not responsible for illegal use(s) of its products purchased by anyone.

Problem is, they are selling an assembled, ready to use transmitter that is apparently not certified.

Specifically,

3. Section 302(b) of the Act provides that "[n]o person shall manufacture, import, sell, offer for sale, or ship devices or home electronic equipment and systems, or use devices, which fail to comply with regulations promulgated pursuant to this section." Section 2.803(a)(1) of the Commission's implementing regulations provides in pertinent part that:

Except as provided elsewhere in this section, no person shall sell or lease, or offer for sale or lease (including advertising for sale or ease), or import, ship, or distribute for the purpose of selling or leasing or offering for sale or lease, any radiofrequency device unless ... [i]n the case of a device subject to certification, such device has been authorized by the Commission in accordance with the rules in this chapter and is properly identified and labeled as required by S: 2.925 and other relevant sections in this chapter.

Relevant portions of Part 15 lets us build up to five of our own transmitters, for our own use only, and we can use them provided they comply with either the field strength or configuration requirements.

In light of what happened to Hobbytron and the kit assembler/resellers I'm not too sure how that's gonna work out.

Perhaps they are taking the sell and run approach :-)

. . . .

I wouldn't risk it .. for another $18 you could buy something with stereo output, WAY better specs, legally sold and excellent support. I would bet this company won't be in business for long or could be facing a stiff FCC fine for selling these 200mW units already assembled. They obviously didn't read part15 regulations very carefully, if at all. Recently, hobbytron got fined over $10000 for doing this on a small scale ... these guys are doing this exclusively.

One thing to keep in mind is that power (in a transmitter) is about 1/4th as much for mono vs. stereo. So this unit at 200mW is really equal to a stereo unit at 50mW.

Ooooh. Best you check out the other thread entitled, ironically...FM Transmitter....(started by wJohn and has a multitude of posts)

PS Just saw Taybrynns post to this thread....a bit too heavy to digest at one sitting without reading the discussion from the above suggestion.
