I was just telling someone this trick, and thought it should be posted here:
Many times it's cheaper to buy MORE than you need if you are close to the next price break.
Here is just one example from my last order:
Part # 511-BTA08-400B - Triac
I needed 240 (10 boards, 24 each) That came to
240 * .594 = 142.56
The next price break occurs at 250 or more parts.
If I ordered 250, the price drops to .479 each.
250 * .479 = 119.75
So I got 10 spares for 22.81 LESS!!!

That's always a great thing to remember, especially on parts that would be good to have spares for.

I make sure I check every part after I import the BOM's.
It's SOOO worth the effort - You win 2 ways - More parts and less money!!!

Even if you're close to the breaking point it's sometimes worth paying for 1 or 2 parts and geting several more for free.

My uncle found it was cheaper to order more sod than he needed because it included free delivery and he just gave it to the neighbors. Your finding reminded me of being the wheelbarrow kid who had to deliver all the extras around the neighborhood!
Great reminder for this season of buying. To be followed quickly by the season of soldering...

Most resistors are .09 ea so if you order 45 they are 4.05, 200 they fall to .02. so 200 would be 4.00
45 - 4.05
200 -4.00

Thanks wake. Probably worth a closer look at the common parts to see if that makes sense for other parts to. I may to that in my "spare" time, and add it to the wiki.

i did the same sort of thing mainly because of the postage costs and wanted to make sure i got what i reckoned would be a fair amount to cover the postage also. Courier turned up today with my box of parts, i was expecting a box about 12"x6"x4" which is usually the size for a big order.....what i got was one 2' by 12" by 6"...why???... because the 24pin IC sockets were in a tube and that must have been the only size box that they would fit into....was like a mystery box searching through the bubble wrap to find the parts
