Hey all,
I have been reading about power to the 595's
Last year I ran one 595 and powered it throught the CAT5 cable from the PC.
Next year i plan on runnning three 595's.
Do I just run CAT5 from the out to the in on each board?

Also, if i decide to use a REN-C, how does that tie in.

Thanks

The RenC won't tie in. 595 Uses the parallel port, and the Renard designs use the serial port.

I just built 3 Ren-C's to make my 595's DIM. From what I see power will be required via a separate cable. This may or may not be able to be supplied via the cat 5 cable feeding data to your ren-c and 595 combo.

I ran the out from one into the in of the other (going from 1 to 3 595s) but I also ran a separate line from +5 and GND from one board to another. Don't know why, but that's what I did.

In a nut shell you can "just run CAT5 from the out to the in on each board". There are some variables that play into the mix. Distances are the biggest culprit.

The Ren-C will go between the 595 and pc. This will utilize the serial port instead of the parallel port and will allow the 595 to dim. It will also allow for longer cables between the controller and pc.

There is more involved but this will give you the basic ideas.

so how do you hook up three 595's with REN C's at the same time?

Basically this is how I understand they are all connect together. You have to repeat this for each serial port. Also there are 2 cable between each Ren-C and 595.

computer-----Ren-T----Ren-C----Ren-C---Ren-C

Someone correct em if incorrect.
Sorry I tried to correct the spaces and tabs and they will not stay when saved.

In theory you could connect it as in the attached pic (not my best work, just something quick and dirty)

However, due to the current limitations of the firmware you wouldn't connect 3 on the same serial port unless you knew you would always keep your event interval at about 100msec.

Thanks! Nice picture Lunatic :)

Yeah... that serial port thing is kinda annoying... you'd think we could just jump over the dimming levels...

I hope by next fall the really smart people who understand the problem will have it fixed...

That or I'll be buying serial ports :)
