Grinch main chip

For my Grinch i am useing the chip listed on the parts list i found on this site, the MBI5027 from www.kingelectronics.com for $1.06. I was looking around at different LED sink dirver options and came back to kingelectronics to the MBI5026 which from what i can tell only differs from the 5027 in that it does not have Open/Short Circuit Detection which is bypassed on the Grinch anyway. The price is only slightly lower (but cheaper is cheaper!!) @ $.93. Am i missing something or should this work fine?

I did some more looking and i found the MBI5025 to be even cheaper @ $.83 and it seems to have the same operating characteristics. I must be over looking something. Why is the more expansive one suggested on the parts list?

MBI5025 - doesn't come in a DIP package

MBI5026 - should work fine, get some and test them out and share results

MBI5027 - RJ probably chose it because he had easy access to some


There is nothing that says you can't experiment and find a cheaper solution. Some folks even found some STP16DP05 that worked for them.

BTW: Even cheaper is to get free samples of the Allegro chips
