Ok, I guess I need to edit this post. I put a post in this thread for no more orders, but I guess it's easy to overlook.

So, Please, No More Orders. I'm nearly out of cords.

I will still try to fill the requests that I received before today.

Look at post 28 for a status.
http://www.doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/showpost.php?p=19912&postcount=28

My work is discarding lots of old (totally undesirable) equipment right now. Among the equipment is a lot of PC power cords. I can take as many as I want. There are hundreds.

So, my question is: Would anyone be interested in using these to power their controllers, SSRs or other hardware?

I would be willing to send these to people just for the expense of shipping. I'll even cut off the female ends if you like, to save weight for shipping.

Most of them are 5 or 6 feet long standard PC power cables, and most of them are brand new, never been used. Some of them are 3 parallel onductors, and terminate in a female end that resembles Mickey Mouse's head (these went to a previous generation of Dell laptop power supplies, and are pretty heavy, although I have not cut into one yet to see what gauge they are). There are also some longer cords. So I can accomodate requests for length or style, to some degree.

I have no idea how much it will cost to ship them, but I will find out, if there is interest.

So, if anyone is interested, please post here and let me know how many you would be interested in.

Blurp:

I am definitely interested in 16 or so standard PC power cables. I am going to use them for my SSRs. PM me and let me know about shipping to 35007 and how much it would cost. I DO appreciate your hospitality.

Thanks,

Clark

Thanks for the generous offer! I'd be interested in any quantity you could spare up to about 20. A Priority Mail Flat Rate Box might be a good choice. Same price regardless of weight.

Thanks for the generous offer! I would greatly appreciate 32 or as many as you may be able to get up to 32. Also using for SSR's. I would appreciate longer lengths if you have them but standard would also be great. PM me and let me know how much cheapest shipping method would be. Omzig's idea sounds great!

Well, it looks like there's quite a bit of interest. I'll start collecting them tomorrow.

Some have posted here, and some have PM'ed me.

To be fair, I will fulfill requests in order of timestamp, regardless whether it was a post or PM.

Can someone tell me more about the flat-rate shipping boxes at the post office? Do you just pay for the box, and the shipping is included in the price, like the old pre-stamped envelopes? Does anyone know the price of these boxes, or are they different sizes? I'll look on the USPS website, but if someone with experience can direct me, I'd sure appreciate it.

OK, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this looks like the box is free, and it costs $8.95 to ship it?

Sweet. So I just have to pack one full and see if it is over 20 pounds. And see how many I can get in it. I'll pick up a case or 2 of the boxes tomorrow during lunch.

You are allowed up to 70 lbs in those flat rate boxes.... so cram as many as you can and let us know how many fit.;)

OH, OK. I re-read and saw that the 20lbs. is only on international.

Introducing a quick, easy, and convenient way for you to ship Priority Mail packages. The Priority Mail Flat Rate Box features predetermined rates regardless of weight (domestically) or destination, similar to the Flat Rate Envelope.

Some key benefits:

-Can be used for Domestic Priority Mail ($8.95) and International Priority Mail ($23 to Canada and Mexico- $37 to all other countries, 20 lb weight limit applies)

I was able to cram 26 in a flat rate box with both the male and female ends still attached. I'm think that 32 will fit with the female ends cut off.

I'd like to ask for each person who spoke for some to please PM me and tell me if you want them WITH or WITHOUT the female ends. (if you have already said which you want, you don't have to PM me)

I think the easiest way to do this is just charge $10 per box to cover the PP fees, gasoline, and tape. If there's any left over, I'll buy my kids an ice cream cone for packing the boxes.

Sound fair? OK.

One more thing. Let's hold up on any new orders for right now. I have over 500 spoken for right now, and I want to make sure that there are enough to fill the requests before getting any more hopes up.

I'll start at the to of the list and PM you as I am able to fill you request. Please don't try to send money yet.

OOps, should have read further, sorry.

The flat rate shipping boxes do come in different sizes, and are really just that, anything you can fit inside ships for the price of the box. You can purchase them at
www.usps.com, and they will deliver them to you at no charge. You can even purchase the postage online via 'click & ship'. Of course, you can also pick them up at your local post office too.

You go to the USPS website and order the boxes. Certain ones are free. You have to print the shipping label, which can be done on their site, or from PayPal, which you will probably be using for payment, and is deducted from your account.

I picked up a bundle of 25 of them today from the Post Office near work. They asked that I only take one bundle from them, because they don't typically keep veery many on hand. He asked me to ordere any more that I need online.

By the way, I have started working on filling boxes.

I don't know how I got the cables in the boxes during lunch today for testing, but they are MUCH harder to fit that many in there now. But once i put the "atomic knee" on them, I finally make it.

I'm running out of cables. I'm afraid there won't be enough for everyone. But If I run out before filling all orders, I'll ask if there are any more I can get and I'll keep watching the bins at work for discarded cords.

I'll keep this post updated with the latest status.

I took a look at one I have and it's 18 AWC, which is pretty typical.

I'd be interested in 128 for my SSRs, the longer lengths the better. My zip is 78602.

Thanks!

Try 500+ female ends.

I couldn't find anything to do with them, so we tossed 'em. That's still a lot less in the landfill than there would've been if the whole cords had gone.

Days before blurp posted his freebies, I ordered a lot of 60 PC cords on Ebay. I only needed 32 plus a few spares. I have 24 left that I was planning on putting on Ebay to recoup the cost, but figured I give anyone here a chance to buy. They cost me $.60 a piece. I'm selling them at my cost of $.60 a piece, plus the mailing cost.

They are all black with the exception of one and it is grey. All are typical PC length(5-6ft). All are 18 guage. A number of them are brand new and the rest are in very good condition.
PM me if you are interested.

We could come up with 4 or 5 titles (Most helpful, extra mile award, etc...)

Thoughts?

It was mentioned in some other post the possibility of a Ebay-type feedback system. So, I guess that means comments like:

"AAAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++", or "Great DIYC'er!", or my favorites, ones like this:
"(¯`'•.¸(¯`'•.¸(¯`'•.¸T.E.R.R.I.F.I.C.!.!.•' ´Â¯).•'´¯).•'´¯)", or
