Seen this on EBAY and was wondering if this couldn't get converted to LED and then , we could simply multiply each leg to what ever size we needed for display ( say for example - rather than say 5 leds per segment , we vould use say 20 - only for the height /sizeadjustment .
Ok guru's , could this work ? Inquiring minds want to know :lol:

I imagine somebody would have to actually buy one and take it apart, to see how it works and if it could be easily converted to other use.

That still wouldn't satisfy many of the more hardcore diyers, tho, who would want to build it all from scratch.

So what happens when you reach your 'retirement', display stops working :-). HAHA. Frankz is right, no telling what's under the hood. Could be something that just sends a clock pulse to a decrementing counter, and then you'd have all the display logic. Or it could be a prom or a pic with a program burned in.

There's tons of circuits out there that'd cost under a buck to make that would act as counters, etc... Here's a starting place if you're looking to get dirty:
