i added 4 -50 pixels to each universe ended up with 20 channels per universe. but theses are rgb channels so i check the big once i do it tells me channels to big??

512 / 3 = 170 pixels per universe maximum.

I a perfect world...
42 * 4 = 168 only two unused pixels per universe.

for strings of 50, you can only do 3 strings, or 150 pixels per universe.

20 wasted per universe, 80 wasted per device.
Not good, but that is the ugly math.

think he thought i had 682 board not 681 so im trying to learn how to put in proper dmx codes i cant figure it out if i have more than 150 in a universe.

It does not matter what board you have.

A Universe is limited to 512 channels or 170 Pixels.

After you organize your Universes in Manage Raw Channels and click the button to Sort for Output - HLS will renumber your channel numbers properly.

If you see a channel number larger than 512 - HLS will complain about the Universe being too BIG and will not allow you to output that universe.

BIG universes are only allowed using some of the special USB devices that mange multiple combined universes.

The difference in the 681 board and the 682 is how many universes the board can manage once you get the data to it.

681 will manage 4 while the 682 will manage 6.

Not sure what you mean when you refer to "DMX Codes"

If you don't know how to set your Universe numbers and Channel Numbers in HLS "Manage Raw Channels" - there are multiple videos that show that.

This is the PRIME step to properly set up all of your Universes for output.

No it wouldn't make sense. That upgrade simply gives you more universes available. It doesn't increase the size of the universes. The size of the universe is restricted by DMX standard. Correct?

im in the learning process of using different pixel sizes im fine with the normal 3 stings of 50 but any change im lost. Its nothing with hls its just that i didnt know that i couldnt go higher than 512 in a universe.
