View Full Version : A different(?) spiral bug?

Hi Sean.

I'm not sure if this is another symptom of the known bug with spirals. But that one, for me, has always just been a glitch at the end of each rotation, and therefore easy to work around with cut and paste. This one is a glitch throughout the entire generated effect.

Generate the effect 'TGIC_SPIRAL1" on my MEGATREE2 target.

The animated GIF looks good. But when I bring the .lcb file into LOR, I see many problems. For example:
* The channels from strands 2-4 are much too dim
* There are artifacts on strand 10's channels, as well as some others like it

I'm reporting this because it's so different than the other spiral bugs I've seen. I tried this with the latest (as of last night) download, as well as the current (as of 10 minutes ago) online tool.

I missed the Thursday night session - if you can give any projected timeline for fixes on spirals that would help me plan my sequencing schedule. Spirals are the main effect that I want from Nutcracker...

Thanks!

I can confirm it behaves that way for me too. I finally just knuckled down and sequenced my own spirals earlier. Nutcracker makes them a whole lot easier and nicer looking, but they never quite look like what I'm after especially with 'glitches'. LOR here as well, BTW.

That's the reason I'm asking about the timeline- not to rush Sean or suggest he's not working fast enough. If the fix isn't likely to come for a few more weeks, I'll have to resort to either hand-sequencing the spirals, or going without. That old Goose is gettin' fat which means Christmas is coming faster than we think ;)

That's probably why I haven't relied on Nutcracker TOO much. For me though, I think Nutcracker is absolutely invaluable in the fact that it generates effects which I can paste into a sequence to get a visual reference of how they should look, then use that to create my own if they don't look quite right. I don't use many effects that emulate those of Nutcracker (Spirals are a big one though), but it saves a tremendous amount of trial and error for the ones that I do use!

Sean - I know you've been busy working on your own stuff and I respect that. But I was wondering if you'd have a chance to take a look at this and tell me if it's the same old spiral bug or something different? And any thoughts on when it might be fixed. It's ok if that answer is "not for awhile yet" - I just need to know if I should start reworking these by hand or just wait for a fix.

Thanks! :)

i plan on working the spiral effect and maybe have it fixed by this Thursday for the weekly tutorial. I am working on getting 3 Aether II's finished before tomorrow.
Have 6x128 pixels out on spider and web now.

my sons and I made an 8 foot spider and a 20' square spider web for Halloween, Spider was 1/2" flex irrigation pipe ($10 for 50'), we made a 6' dome using cable ties. Covered body with trash bag and sprayed expanding foam on it. There is a 1/2" pvc frame inside so that it could be hung on either the house or the web.

Now if i can just get something sequenced by tomorrow.

Nutcracker can wait. You have a Halloween display to complete, and I'm guessing a Christmas display to start..... :) Good luck!

Thanks for the update Sean. Not trying to rush you - just get enough info to plan my sequencing patterns :)

Very nice spider!

Update on spiral

I have rewritten the effect. New version faster, has some new effects. I am not done, I was in church from 8am to 2pm performing with the choir and orchestra.

Yesterday, I did get effect rewritten. I am continuing work today.

This is awesome news. I've put my sequencing on hold, concentrating on starting setup and finishing the last of my builds. I needed a break anyway! :) But once you have the new effect ready, I'll be happy to put it through its paces again :)

Great work Sean - ou don't know how thankful I am that you created Nutcracker and support it so well...
