View Full Version : Our dog Buddy

Buddy goes in for surgery this morning. He tore his ACL in his right leg this time. They will be doing a TPLO to modify the knee joint geometry so he no longer needs the ACL. He will be restricted from play for 10-12 weeks min. Buddy is a 6 year old 110lb Bull Mastiff.

Please pray for Buddy. I know he will come out of surgery just fine with the prays from all of you.

Hang in there -- My son's dog "Bruce" has had the same surgery twice -- both rear legs. Prayer helps all family members whether they have 2 or 4 legs...

It's crazy how a dog can wrap themselves around a family's heart and become a family member. He will be in our prayers.

Buddy has our prayers- even from our little Chloe who tends to be a little demon...

Buddy has our prayers - and Spencer says: "Been there, my friend - I got THE operation about 2 months ago!"

I've always loved animals in general, and dogs have been a big part of my life. My wife, who didn't have any pets growing up, really wanted a Boxer 6 years ago. Now we have 2 plus a Great Dane and they are the best children anyone could ask for (Most of the time....)!!

Sending great thoughts your way, and hoping for a speedy recovery! He looks like a good, healthy pup, so I'm sure he'll be 'wanting' to play in no time! :)

You can say that again - I lost our dog of 16 years in July - cried like a baby... Anyway - hope all goes well and he gets back to chasing after the mailman again!

Thinking of Buddy...and you...

With you Brian. We just lost our Shi Tzu of 11 years less than a month ago. Never knew how hard it would be to set there with her and see them have to put her down. She was truly one of a kind. Didn't think I would cry like that until the day came.

Dropped him off this morning and I will be getting a call right before and after surgery. I will update this thread after I speak to the Doctor.

We're praying for a good outcome. The most difficult part will be trying to keep him quiet afterward -- he's going to want to please you but doesn't know that's not good for him while he's healing.

Our previous dog (also named Buddy, BTW) passed away one year ago this month (17.5 years old!). Its sad to say that I didn't cry when my father died (there were issues that I won't get into here) but I cried like a baby when our Buddy left us...... Strange how life is.

Just got a call from the Doctor. They are going to perform the procedure now and will call in a few hours when he comes out of the OR.

:thup2: It will be fine.

Dr. called. Puppy is out of surgery and awake. They said everything went very well. If all goes well tonight he can come home tomorrow. He now has metal plates in both back legs.

Now the 8-12 week recovery starts. Try keeping an energetic large dog to stay calm and lay down. It was not easy the 1st time he had the TPLO and I am sure it will not be much easier this time but we will get through it together.

Keep him busy! Rawhides (Costco SOMETIMES has good American Made ones... other times out of stock for months), Dark Rooms, Crate time (I hate doing that). Your right, not an easy task....

Just set him in front of the chat window all day that'll keep him bored and sleeping.. glad he'll be able to come home soon.

Seems we have many dog owners at DIYC..

Glad to hear all went well for Buddy!!!

He used to be 125lbs when he had the TPLO procedure on his left leg. The Vet wanted us to get him down to 110lbs as it would be easier on his rear legs. I am sure that is why his partially torn ACL on his right side lasted 18 months since the left one went.

No calls from the hospital last night so all must have went well over night. They told me no news is good news. Waiting for the call to come get him today.

I will update this thread with a picture once Buddy gets home today.

A heart felt Thank You goes out to all of you, from me and my family, for all your prayers and thoughts!

Buddy is doing much better today. He is acting like himself again. He is also putting some weight on his leg. Now is the tough part, keeping him calm and restricting movement to the minimum.

Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts and prayers for our "little" puppy.

Best wishes to you guys. My pets are my family so I know how hard it can be.
