I just bought two LEDTRIK PCB's from John yesterday and am in the process of ordering all of the components to build the two boards. I have run into two problems and wanted to see if someone could help me out:
1) Mouser #649-65474-002 (Tin Shunt) is not available at this time. Can someone help me find a equivalent replacement part for this.
2) I went to order 2 x 1000 333 5mm Ultra Red LED's from www.besthongkong.com. The order totaled about $40 but the only shipping method available to me cost $26. Can someone help me find a domestic distributor that I could order equivalent LED's from?
Thanks for the help guys ... I am a newbie to the area of computer-controlled lighting, so any help that is offered to me will be greatly appreciated!
David :D
shipping is a killer from there and takes close to 12 days to get them, but thats were we all buy them.
649-65474-002LF is the (Tin Shunt)and should be in stock
or you can take one off a old hard drive (the little black jumper used for addresing the hd)
I got my shunt from an old isa modem...
and the leds from ebay....

Hi,
The shunt and 4 x 2 header is nothing special. You should be able to 'harvest' one from an old PC Motherboard or buying a similar item from Mouser. You can even buy a slightly larger item and cut it to size. I buy 20 x 2 headers and just slice them up with a box cutter.
The LEDs could be whatever you can get hold of via ebay. What you are looking for is a 5mm Red LED with a high level of lumience. the HK LEDs are 1000 mcd with a narrow angle.
Hope that helps.
John.

Ronp and Lazz: Gotcha - thanks for that info.
John - correct...5mm RED LED with a high level of lumience. I found some through DigiKey that were 1500-2000 mcd, but order a 1000 of them increases the cost vs the $19.99 deal @ besthongkong.com. I'll keep looking around - hopefully I can find a domestic dealer that can offer a bulk price comparable to besthongkong.com.
RandyA - thanks for that offer !I'll take you up on that if I cant find something comparable.
fkostyun - Ahhh  ....I never thought about tapping Fry's as a resource. Great call - thanks!
I must step in at this point and make a warning. There is more to it then just "buying brighter LED's for ledtriks." I would never tell someone what to do but I feel I must sometimes remind people that there is a little more to things than it appears. The leds were chossen after much testing and trial and error. If you wish to change take into consideration all the effects your changes will cause. One is current draw. The driver sections in the Ledtriks is not design to handle much more current. The first thing someone will do is run a seqence while checking the draw and say " its not maxed out" and while thats true you must consider the worst case. when every led is on at the same time do to a locked up computer or a seqence something you will find is that this pushes the limit of the package dissipation. they will start heating up. If you really want more output use higher effiecenty leds that put out more light for the same power. This of course would drive the cost up greatly. The next ledtriks design has a power section that will handle just about anything you want to do about leds as long as they are rgb leds.

Now thats the one i'm waiting for, i heard rumors that it may happen but hearing it from the horses mouth... so to speak
I've been thinking about something like an led matrix christmas light display for ages, just couldn't get round to designing one as we had our first born in feb.
If the spacing was increased to 2-3 inches between each led then it would more than cover my front window and it would look better from far away, and be part of the display rather than a sign post in the garden . . . Didnt mean to offend anyone, just my own personal preference.
edit- How long do we have to wait for the rgb matrix controller?
need to know so i can slowly get the rgb leds stocked up......

This was fairly specific.
John my comments were not in reference to yours. I just didn't want anyone to spend time and money to have all their leds or controllers hurt. You'r info was correct.
