View Full Version : Frank's 24 Channel Renard Small Co-Op Opportunity UPDATED

05-29-2007, 02:48 AM
The cost will be at $15/board, and the shipping cost will be $4.75 for up to three boards, four or more boards will be $9.00 (shipping to continental us, others please email or PM)
Payment can be sent via paypal to xxxxx (co-op closed)
The co-op order will be placed on September 15th, so the co-op will be considered closed on September 14th. The test board has been built and is working perfectly!!!!! Image has been updated to show the new board!
http://www.ahwatukeeholidays.com/2007/images/IMG_3021.JPG
OK folks, I have finally gotten everything together and done the last bit of testing on my renard board and it is good to go. I had several people ask me about a possible co-op, so I would like to see if anyone is interested. I do not have an estimated cost yet, but, I anticipate it to be near $15 per board. The final board will be black with white lettering!.
About the board
This is a 24 channel renard based PIC dimmer, with integrated SSRs.
What inputs will the board accept?
The board has been tested with both RS232 and RS485 communications. The board will also accept the output from another renard board. The pins that are used are the same as current designs that are out there, so the boards (should) interface with each other. The board will also pass power on pins 1/2, and input/output the zero cross on pin 3, maintaining compatibility with current boards
Why is this different?
The first reason for my design, is that I needed 72 channels for my mega tree, which ended up working out to three 24 port boards.
Once I began, I also wanted a completly self-sufficient board (similar to a LOR product.)
This design also features all triacs on the outside edge. This allows for easy heatsink installation.
The board features an onboard transformer, and voltage regulator to provide 5v for the boards operation.
If you wanted to run a 24 channel light show this year, you would need a PC with a serial port (USB adapters work too!) Vixen, a DB9-RJ45 adaptor, a cat 5 cable, and an assembled board/
Anything else?
One thing to note, is that this design uses surface mount optical isolators (the MOC3023S.) The reason for this, is last year I accidently purchased 200 of them, and needed to find a use for them. This has changed! It will now accept either the standard DIP optos, or surface mount[/u]
The surface mount optical isolators are not hard to solder on.
Reccommended current is a maximum of 15 amps per side, and 6 amps per channel. (This is based off the trace sizes)
This board has also been updated to support 120/240v operation for those folks that use 240v. With this, there have been 4 sets of jumpers added to the board for this support. There are two voltage selection jumpers, one transformer input section, and a zero cross output selection.
I am going to place an preliminary order first, with an order size of 10 boards. With this order, this will be to test the final changes that have been made to the board to verify that there are no problems or issues. MACROSILL and WJOHN will be testing this board also to verify assembly, and that no problems arrise.
BOM of materials is now attached!!

It will vary anywhere from about $35-40 to $60 depending on quanity of parts purchased, and from where.
The cost goes go up, since this board DOES have the SSR's built in.

And I can tell that it is a great looking board too! Specifically when three 24 Channel boards are connected to to a 72 channel MEGA tree Frank is planning this year.
I cant wait to get my board home and start on the construction. We have already talked about making the input power universal for 110/240 volt operation Frank was able to source a PCB mount transformer with 110/240 primary windings. Standby for an update early next week

Its a blank Pcb. Your looking at about $35-50 for parts with lots of assembly required. At this time i dont think there is a co-op but i would be willing to join/help one if it were to be organized.

Contemplating a Renard C but the distance from the pc to board is 6" then the 595 board next to it. All them cables through the wall?
What about PROGRAMED pic chips? Available?
Am assuming this board is connected just like a 595 using cat5 cable to the pc?

Hi All,
Does anyone know what the wiring layout is for the DB9 (RS232) to RJ45 connector on this board? I've seen various adapters for DTE, DCE configurations. I'm just going to splice a cable with the appropriate connectors at each end, but I don't know what the pin assignments should be. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

IV been working on my boards now for a while and I’m almost done. I just want to make sure I have everything right before I power up. How exactly do the jumpers settings work. I’m running my boards on 120v so does that mean need to jumper the left two pins? Also what’s the jumper for on the bottom of the board under the transformer?
Thanks Jason
Hi Jason,
You're right, for the 120 volt position, I put the jumpers on the left-most pins. I was able to see the jumper configuration on Frank's photo located here: http://christmasinshirley.com/wiki/index.php?title=24_Channel_Renard_with_SSR_Assembl y_Instructions
As for the jumper on the bottom, I'm not sure of its' purpose, but again, I followed the picture's setting for it.

The signal that runs the controller comes from the 9-pin serial connector (DB9) on the back of your PC or mac (or from a USBtoDB9 cable),... the rj45s pinout is used to send those signals to the controller.

One usb to serial adapter, a female adapter to wire in the cat 5 cable to connect to the dongle. Then I can connect the other end of the cat5 to the renard 24. So on the serial side I grab pin 3-(transmit data) and pin 5-(GND). What pins do I use on the rj45?
