If you have never done it... its not as painful as those guys made it seem.

I hadn't seen a plug with the little guide before. The plugs I have been using just push in and crimp. Seems like having to mess with that little guide is just an extra step, not all ends have those.

Also make sure you get the right ends, solid vs stranded. Maybe that is what the little guide was for, stranded cable?

I have never had that thing on my ends. Just on end slide it over the wires make sure they are in the right order and crimp.

That little plastic guide is used on cat6 plugs to help keep the conductors correctly spaced to minimise crosstalk. Cat5 has a lower spec doesn't use them.
