I have made the strip board version of the oslon 595 controller here:
http://computerchristmas.com/christmas/link-how_to/HowToId-84/Stripboard_64_Channel_595

I have completed it and plugged it into my computer to test it. when i turn the power on i get random lights on. Then i plugged in the parallel plug and they went off, then i turned all the outputs on in vixen using the olson 595 plugin and nothing... i have checked all the wiring and i can't find anything wrong. what do you guys think
Here is 2 pics of the top and the bottom of the board, thanks.

Check your parallel port settings in the bios.

hi

A number of things to check.. the fact that they go random when you remove the port is a good sign that the 595's are working ok. Thats just the noise from mains making the outputs get switched on randomly via the open circuit inputs.

Check that you parralel port is set in the bios to port 378 and is set to EPP mode.

check in Vixen that you have the port setting on the 595 plugin set to port 378 also.

check your wiring to confirm that you have wired the port correctly to the correct pins of the 595's

if you are sure that all that is correct then start swapping chips but it doesnt seem like that is the problem... You really need to go over your layout with a fine tooth comb to check for any shorts and uncut tracks etc.

I have built heaps of stripboard 595's and there are always things that you missed. its hard to check your own work.
