What is the purpose of the capacitors in the 595 design?

Is there a "theory of operation" document somewhere where I can learn what's going on?

I have successfully built many different controllers, but am now trying to UNDERSTAND what I have built.

They are bypass capacitors, also known as decoupling capacitors. Here is one link (be careful, I'm not sure if this is actually cypress or a mirror), google will find lots more.
