Anyone have a how to or links to a how to build a Christmas count down timer?
I'd like to put a DD**HH**MM**SS till Christmas timer out with my display this year.
Thanks

I would also like to build one of these, but think I would be in over my head. If you search Christmas countdown, that will bring up some posts of others who are working on these.

Yes I do-

Old PC, old monitor in the window, and Countdown Timer freeware to do the countdown.

Cut it back to using like 3 blue 5MM per segment of the 7 segment and make the displays about 1ft tall, use an LEDancer like circuit charlieplexing the 6 digits (HH:MM:SS) and you would just need a timesource...

COOP!!!! Phil lets get going!! :-D ;-)

I am about 80% done with that, and YES its HUGE! Got busy with a lot of other stuff and have not finished it yet. Cory's been hounding me about it actually. I made the controller using an SX micro and a RTC since I could not get a good timing using a clock counting method.

Is this something you want to be controlled by Vixen? The only reason I ask was last week I was thinking that Vixen 3.0 might make this extremely easy. Either just by grouping digits or by creating a separate effect for it.

Just to put it out there, if you have an LEDTriks and Triks-C, then this is made really easy as it's built into the LTC.exe app and automatically calculates it based on the system time.

I have a plug-in that will display a countdown (or any other text) on an RGB grid or other props. I used it with a grid of GECE pixels, but it will work with any other Vixen-compatible props. It's going to take me a while to clean it up and document it - I have some hard-coded stuff in there now, so it's not too easy to just plug in to another display. If you don't need it right away, it might do somewhat of what you want.

I'm interested in that. With the way I am storing my GECEs, I thought I can easily do some playing with pixel grid matrices.

I know everyone like making their stuff but why not just buy one like this.

Look forward to any of your How-To's. A monkey could build stuff with the examples and documentation of your "HOW I DID..." series. I know, because I did.

And it needs to be HUGE and use RGB leds and make coffee, and shovel your driveway!!! Wait... hmmm...

Well I don't want to put a computer monitor in the house window, it would not be seen out at the road.
And I don't want to put a computer monitor and computer out in the yard to freeze or be stolen, plus the cost is too high.
Also, I don't want it run by Vixen, I want those channels for my show.

So what I was actually looking for was something like this:
http://home-decor.hsn.com/36-countdown-to-christmas-snowman-yard-decoration_p-4279010_xp.aspx
but much less expensive that I might hack. I could build a larger 7 segment display from LEDs connected is series or
such and use the guts from the decoration as the clock to give me an accurate count down.

Anyone do something like that?
Thanks

How do you do the timer?

Big? I recall an installation at Burning Man years ago that used 4' fluourescent tubes to create 8' tall 7-segment digits - you could read it for a LONG distance across the desert. (It wasn't changing fast enough to show seconds, tho).

I purchased two of these and they are GREAT ! ! ! I squared off/cut off the area right below Santa and change it into a chimney and am in the midst of attaching them to my TUNE TO sign ( have to wait for the vinyl to arrive first though - otherwise I would post a pic of them )

can't go wrong for the price ...

The pic below is kinda what I was talking about for changing it over to a chimney ( did this fast in photoshop just for posting so you get kind of an idea )
