View Full Version : Group Buy: 100ct Christmas Light strings (poll only)

This thread is to gauge interest in a group buy to get 100ct strings of mini Christmas lights.

I'd like to get a count of how many strings people would order, then contact the manufacturers in China directly to see what kind of pricing we could get. The advantage here is that we could order EXACTLY the colors and quantities we want. We can specify cord color, bulb spacing, total cord length, etc.

Pulling a number out of thin air, let's assume we can get lights at $2 a string. Please indicate in this thread how many string you'd buy if we could get lights at that price. I'll use the total as a general number for contacting manufacturers to get pricing. The answer we get back will indicate feasibility of the project.

EDIT: If there are other Christmas lights products that you'd be interested in purchasing in quantity please comment.

I'd be in for at least 150 strings.

At 2 bucks each, I would be in for 200 strands. That is how many stands I plan to add next year any way. But if we could get the price lower, I would be in for 300-400. Just remember, at 2.00 per strand, most everyone can go to their local Target and get them at that price, and not pay shipping. And as I found out this year, shipping lights is not cheap. 10 strands of 100ct mini lights without the boxes, was 17 bucks to get accross the country. So that will have to play into the pricing also.

And lastly, I think someoen did get in contact with a manufacturer last year about this same thing. I don't think it ever happened because the minimum order was equivelent to a shipping container load.

Good luck, I hope you can find someone willing to work with us.

Mrplow, your thoughts echo mine exactly!

My interest would depend on what lights I can get my hands on this year. If I can't get any more green or red lights, I would be interested in 70 +/- strands. But as Mr Plow mentioned.... it would also depend on final price w/ shipping.

Thanks for looking into it though.

I think that it would be better to get into the prospective group buys over on planetchristmas.com than to do one by yourselves. Some of the people there have a lot of experience in this sort of thing in selecting good vendors and finding good parts.

Just a note. $2.00 per 100 string is the normal pre-Christmas price at the local Walmart stores. They usually drop them the $1.00 the day after Christmas,

I was picking those up for 50 cents a box last year.

Yes, you can buy them for $0.50-$1.00/box through mid-january at walmart, target, etc. But come June and July and people start putting together their thoughts for a Christmas display, no lights can be found.

The group buy has not started... yet. Paul is planning on starting it after the first Some info can be found HERE (http://planetchristmas.mywowbb.com/forum12/19867-2.html).

As for price, I have no idea and he has not given any hints. From what everyone says on PC, his LED's are much better than what you can buy in the stores and from all indications, he stands behind them 110%.

Best advise I can give right now is starting January 1, start checking the LED sub-forum on PC...

I'd be in for 200 if the price were some lower. I think a contaner full could be had for a buck apiece. I'm buying like mad on the sales now. Lots of great bargins at hobby lobby / tgt and walmart.

Would be more interested in the LED's. I want to go that route for the next couple of years.

If i could get them for $1 a box in LED I would get also since I am almost out of power short of a 200A line.

Last Year, Paul had 50ct LEDS in red, blue, green, gold, warm white, white and purple. I think they were the colors, and they were between 4.25 and 5.50 a piece. They were the "mini light" size. That is what I remember anyway, I could be mistaken.

Lou

EDIT: I think you had to buy individual color in quantity of 12

And that was the cheapest shipping rate, I was shocked at that cost.

That's what prompted me to start this thread. However, upon learning about transparent glass paint in another thread, I have hopes that clear bulbs can be painted.

If the price is right, I would order 40 red, 40 green and 40 blue. I'm still waiting for the after christmas price to reach .99.

For those that are interested - I have posted a sticky to the top of the forum with the link to the PlanetChristmas LED co-op purchase. I will be joining this co-op this year myself. You can expect final pricing from Paul shortly from what I'm reading. This is by far one of the best deals for a VERY good quality product.

I am hoping he will some out with dimmable C9's. It sounds like they are in the making.

I purchased 200 stings from Home Depot, their after xmas sale It went from $2 each to $1 on sale. I agreed to purchase what they had left and got them for $0.50 ea They also had some other sets I now have 256 strands, most white. I then ordered blub dye at $17/pint Colorine by Rosco, that may have been a mistake but something to try.

Someone had told me in the past that the plastic paint (fusion??) works on lights. No idea how well it works, or how durable it is.

Sams had 400ct boxes of commerical lights for 4.97. Trouble with them are they are the locking bulb kind. If you ever had to repair those darn thing, its a pain in the a...ternoon. I bought a bunch anyway. Anytime I get close to a penny a light, I buy.

If you want to paint bulbs use Vitral glass paint. This paint come in 45ml bottles here in Australia. Be careful with fusion paints as they have some seriously dangerous chemicals, just have a look at there MSDS. I would like to get lots of LED lights but they want a fortune in Australia, but if some one knows where to buy them cheap in Australia I would like to know.
