I tried my hand at the kits this year. 1 of 4 working. 1 I broke the 8 pin plug. 1 pops the breaker when I plug both sides in. Individually, fine, both blown breaker. The last one, the LED lit up last night, but tonight nothing. I am very frustrated. For all my time, the extra $80 to have the assembled would have been worth it.

Never having built and or seen one. It sounds like the one that's popping breakers is because you have one of the 120v inputs reversed.. you have the hot going to where the neutral should be.. so when you plug both in.. it's a dead short across the neutral bus. which pops the breaker.

Have you contacted LOR? I think their support claims to get it working "no matter what" - even if you screwed up. When you say "8 pin plug" do you mean the IC socket? If so, you can get a replacement at RadioShack.

Call LOR tech support. Whatever you broke, they'll send you a new one for free. They'll help you fix it yourself if you want, otherwise I believe you'll need to pay to ship it to LOR but they'll fix it and send it back for free.
BTW, if you put your location in your profile, maybe someone near you will offer to stop by to help you. We do that you know. :)
