I was looking over the 4 channel ssroz parts list. I'm debating on building a 64 channel grinch. I guess my question is do I need to order 16 ssr boards from wjohn? If so that means I need to multiply this parts list by 16?

The SSR parts for 64 channels (16 SSRpcb's) usually run about $160 not including the pcb's.

Thanks wayne that's what I thought but I wanted to make sure before making my decision on which to build.

just a heads up, if you go threw jameco, and order 4amp triacs instead of the 8, you can save about 60 bucks

are u sure this part is good for the job 200v seem low for peek and i think it is a logic triac , just to be sure before ordering

I've ordered 130 of them. I've been using 96 of them since the day after Thanksgiving. Not one problem so far. Plus they are a little shorter so they fit my cases better. I've also found, that even with shipping, if you split your order between Mouser and Jameco you can get a lower bottom line (not much but Jameco didn't have all the things I needed anyway). All I bought from Jameco was the optos, triacs and resistors.

Quick question about the Triacs,

they are rated a max 4amp.. your using a 5amp fast acting fuse. So would'nt the Triac pop before the fuse?

I am running a MAX 100 cnt string of mini lights per channel, the fuse protects 4 channels per SSROZ, would I be safe to use this 4amp triac without loading my circuits?

1. It is not recommended to use the TRIAC near its rated value. Mostly because there is no heatsinking and the die will burn up. Most people here tend to maybe use 50% of its rated value. Recommended is 25% (1 Amp).

2. The fuse isn't meant to protect the TRIAC...it is meant to protect the wire. If you run enough power through the TRIAC to damage it...not so good. But if there is a "real fault", the TRIAC should survive long enough for the fuse to blow.

3. Most fuses will start degrading at 80% of their value. So even a 5 amp fuse will begin to fail at 4 amps.

The main purpose of the fuse is to protect the wiring from catching fire in the event of a short. I would not assume that it would always protect the triac.

Take a look at this spec sheet for a fast-acting fuse (not the exact one that is being discussed). You will see that this 5A fast-acting fuse will not blow until (on average) 100 seconds have passed with a 5.5A current passing through it. So fuses have their limitations.

Something you may already know...but a normal string of 100 mini lights is about a third of an amp. So if you are running a max of one string of lights per channel, the total current draw of all four channels is only 1.33 amps.

Target lights have a lower current draw (might be other brands too).

I think a 4 amp TRIAC would be plenty for what you are discussing. The main reason I started using the 8 amp TRIACs that most of us use, is because I saw a similar one used some place (simpleio??) and found that the price of a lower amperage TRIAC of the same model was the same, or close enough to the same to not want to change to the lower rating.
