i went to the plus over the summer and chuck smith gave a talk about his display during his talk he stated he used 18 guage speaker wire for extension cords whats everyones feeling about this would you do it yes no why why not just wondering

Technically it is wrong to do! However I use 18 awg spt1 all over the place. As long as the load is lower than the rating for the cable then you should be fine. The difference between spt and speaker cable is the color. Both are rated for 600v.

From my point of view I would NEVER do it since I could not verify the how good the insulation is since I highly doubt speaker wire really has any good "regulations" on it.
However...in reality it will probably be okay...just not as safe as you could be for a just a few pennies more...
Just watch your load. Use the same precautions as you would using indoor extension cords. Make sure your loading is acceptable (don't power your entire display through one). They are probably not resistant to UV light, so watch for insulation decaying after a few/many years.

it really depends on the speaker wire, as Brian, an Matt said, just watch the load. Now if you are using tsunami wire or something pro audio (extension cords would be cheaper unless you have a source) i would not worry. That wire is probably better than most wire in the $1 extension cords we buy.
