Here is an excellent article posted by David Moore from holidaycoro.com over at PC on how to tint clear lights instead of paying for expensive Orange and Purple Lights.

Converting cheap clear lights into orange and purple lights (http://forums.planetchristmas.com/index.php?/topic/47743-converting-cheap-clear-lights-into-orange-and-purple-lights/page__view__findpost__p__557306)

Here is the link to the PDF he created:

Thanks for the excellent article David!

This secret has been known for quite a while mostly to repaint blue incans that the paint has peeled on - but a good how-to is nice to have as well.

LOL - just goes to prove - there really isn't anything new. :)

I picked up blue and red at Walmart tonight for $5 a can (they had purple as well). It's $12 a can on Amazon. Amazing difference in price! I need some green as well. Looks like Amazon will at least get a little biz from mevafterall.

I have used red nail polish when I was in a bind for a red globe once.
It seemed to work OK in the short term, i got me out of trouble, but i cant say how long it held up for.
At least it was cheap!

I've done a bit more research on this process and discovered that DupliColor's "MetalCast" paints appear to work even better and they even sell orange (though I've not yet tried this color.) I've updated the instructions and links located here:

Here is a sample of incandescent purple lights:

You just needed to use the search on the page that showed up for ‘Tinting Clear Lights to Orange and Purple Colors’.

Here’s the link though. http://www.holidaycoro.com/v/vspfiles/downloads/TintingClearLightstoOrangeandPurple.pdf
