I just had another great example of the DIYC Community Spirit happen to me and I wanted to share...

Ed (J1Sys) owns a company called Joshua 1 Systems. Among other things, he designs and builds programming boards for microcontroller programmers. I met Ed by accident a couple a years ago when I did a small group buy for Pickit 2's. After learning what I was doing with them, he became a member here and really contributed to the great knowledge here.

I sent him an email the other day asking for price on a PicKit2 and Programming Board so I could get it to JRD for the DIYC Scholarship Program. He replied back saying he woudl take care of it. I was thinking he meant, get me a price. Today, a PicKit 2 with a full set or programming boards showed up at my door. I was having a very bad day at work and home and this totally fixed it. Not just the fact that it saved me $60 or $70 dollars, but also that he would just do it.

I ask that everyone recommend and use him for purchases PicKit2 and 3's. He's not as cheap as the Hong Kong or China Clones, but he's in the USA, he has genuine MicroChip stuff and he ships quickly. His eBay store is also J1Sys.

I don't know much about it, but I know he has also developed some sort of Ethernet Gateway that works with Renards and DMX.

Thanks ED.

Yes JRD, this means you will have your programmer very shortly. I will try to get it out today or tomorrow.

Kelly ... I purchased my PicKit2 and Full Set of Zif Sockets from J1Sys Ebay store. You're right he's a stellar individual. I think I ordered on a weekend and my stuff was here before the next weekend. Very fast service.. I've used the pickit for many things since getting it. It has by far made life much simpler than to not have one.. I used it to test my firmware for the FAST tubes. I used it to program all my Ren48LSD's and Ren24SS. I'm very please with his products. And anytime someone asks which pickit they should get I always point them to the J1Sys store even though there are some cheaper ones out there I like to help support our community.

Yeah I had purchased my PicKit3 off of his Ebay store just before he joined here. Glad he joined us! I really like the adapters he sells!! That socket has had over 1k of PICs in it from the last GB and about to see 1k more!

That's great to hear. I also ordered from him and am pleased with the product.

The only thing I would add is that certain products are advertised to work with certain microcontrollers, but will actually work with a larger number of controller with different pin counts. See this post (http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/showthread.php?14398-PicKit-2-recommendation-issue&p=143097#post143097) for more information.

I too have ordered from Ed. I have two of his DR4's driving my renard boards via ethernet!

I'm also investing in his WS2801 bridge device as we speak...should enable some fun RGB stuff this year.

Anyway, just wanted to add a +1 to ed and his company--great guys to work with!

Ed is a great bloke

I got a pickit3 late last year as well as programming boards, an i also got one of his DR4 (ethernet to 4x ren/dmx out)
Ive had the dr4 running since last year an it has'nt missed a beat, being left on 24/7 spitting out data.
Next year when i start Pixels i reckon his Pixad8 will be on the shopping list
Great Work Ed

my pickit3 came from him as well. 100% top notch quality - and will not hesitate to purchase from again.

Thank you very much Ed!

A year or two ago there were a lot of questions about PIC programmers and I was suggesting J1Sys programmers and also listing a cheap programmer but suggesting that the J1Sys programmers should be better if you are serious and can afford to pay a little more.

I'm the kind of person that likes to plan out my purchases with a shopping list and see what I want and then what I can afford, one of the first things on my list before I was chosen as a winner for the DIYC Scholarship this year was a PICKit2 from J1Sys!

Thank you Ed and Kelly! :)

Just had someone in the chat last night was looking at a PicKit3 from somewhere for 50$ with not sockets.. I talked to him for a few minutes and explained the benefits of the zif sockets and boom he saw the light.. for a few extra bucks makes like much simpler and J1sys has another sale.

I received my PICKit2 Friday, Opened it Saturday, everything seems to be good, haven't tried it yet. Like most of this stuff it is smaller then I thought it would be but that's ok! :)

Thanks Kelly and Ed!

Working with Ed last year with the ECG8 make my display a reality. Ed is a guy that says what he is going to do and does it. His work is bullet proof.
