It has only been just a few short days since I was sent a link to a lighting display that lead me here to this site. I already have plans in the mix for 2008 and have some PCB's on the way. If the mod gods permit I would like to keep a running journal or log of my activities for 2008 showing the steps into setting up my first display.
P.S. I would like to thank all for yet another addiction. :D
Thanks

Welcome guys to the Community. It certainly is addictive and will only get more so. first youll start out small and youll end up with a Mega display within No time. Get out while you can!!!
Wombat
Addictive is the word. In the last 2 weeks since I found this forum I have signed up for 128 channels of lynx, started my first sequence in vixen, of course i had to first take a picture of the front yard to use in the preview. I then thought that it would be a shame to waste some dimming channels on my wireframes and blowmolds so I just ordered a grinch and 4 ssr's to run those. Now I am working on my shopping list of PVC pipe and fittings needed for leaping arches and mega trees not forgetting a pile of easels for building mini trees. Now I have to figure out if am goingto to get a sub panel for the extra juice requirements or spend the next 12 months buying LED strings with every spare dime. I watched the crazy lights show on TLC and am already worried that I'll turn into one of those crazies that starts putting the lights up in September. I have to go now and take my medication, wbuehler I wish you luck you may need it.

I watched that same show! I liked alot of what they were doing but some of it to me was boring. I like what these guys are doing on here. Never in my life would have thought I would be addicted to this but in the last week I have purchased about 15000 lights and with what I have I am probably around 18000 or so. I have built a dozen snowflakes out of rebar and 5 minitrees. I want to make 5 more mini trees. I wish it would warm up here so I can build my mega tree! How many lights do most people use for a mega tree? I plan on using 2250 on 12 channels. 11 channels for 2000 lights and 1 for the 50 light star. If I can convince the woman to let me I would like to add about 4000 more lights to the mega tree so I can alternate colors. and will need 22 more channels. WOW Bob Addiction is the word.

Hey Bill, Newbie here. Just found the site a few days ago and have been doing a lot of reading. How did you come to your final decision on what type of a system (Boards etc.) to get?
Leon
wbuehler
01-04-2008, 08:13 AM
Good question. I actually made a final deceision last night as to what I would like to run. I have decided on the following.
1. A grinch using the DMX to Grinch converter to control on/off lights such as LED strobes.
2. A Lynx Freestyle (Currently in Beta) to control lights that need dimming.
But if you have read through this thread you will see that I have bought/been given PCB's for several other controllers and yes I have/did. This is because I felt the need to get some of these as the Co-Op's for some are currently happening and it also gives me the ability to use one of the other controllers in case I should have a need. This way I will already have it and not have to worry about were to get the PCB from should the need arise.
My primary reason is that I wanted everything to be controlled via DMX was 1. It is a lighting standard. 2. The DMX dongle for the PC plugs into the USB port which makes for an easier setup since I do not have to worry about lpt port or serial port issues. 3. I have purchased some RGB pixels that are controlled via DMX so having a DMX setup was a logical choice for me.
Now I'm not saying that lpt or serial is bad they are not it's just that I wanted DMX and it had the added plus of running from USB. You make make your own decision as what is best for your hardware/light setup.
I would sugget the following for anyone new:
1. Get a game plan of what you would like to do together
2. Read Read Read the forum posts and the wiki
3. Visit the chat room and ask questions I have seen most of the DIYC products inventors in this room and they have always been happy to answer questions.
4. After you have knowledge of each system make your decision on what you would like to use. A lot of first timers will usually start with a Grinch it is a basic on/off type controller and it will help you get your feet wet. You can then move to a more advanced setup later.

I will be watching this one close, looks like you are walking down almost the same path as I am.
I have also thought that I should do a blog. There are many free webpages out there, as well as blog pages. I have used BLOGSPOT (google) when I was doing tournament fishing (kept the sponsors happy), and have set up a blog page for my christmas light display. Google also offers a free webpage, it's very basic but very funtional. You don't get a short and sweet domain name, unless you go out and buy one and link your page to it. I also began doing a myspace page and using that to blog and stuff, but honestly....no offense to anyone that uses it....myspace is a haven for spammers, pervs and sicko-s. Not what I want to subject my family and any other family's to.
But as for journaling from beginning to end, this is great!!

To help save space on this thread and to help save space in general I have dusted off my Webserver and brought it back on line. The posts have been editied to include links to the images rather than the images themselves. If you click on a link that does not work please wait a couple of hours and try again. This will allow the DNS entry to replicate around the world. I just added the DNS entries in a little while ago and it might take time for the updates to replicate around the world. After your ISP gets the updates records the link should start to work for you.

It is with a sad voice that I post now. With the death of the Freestyle I must now revisit what my setup will be for 2008. My goal is to stay all DMX to help make things easier when it comes time for the setup. I also see that the Lynx 2nd Co-Op may be full as well, hopefully I can get in on this one if it happens and be able to stay with a DMX dimmer. I also see that maybe the Renard with some updated firmware may also work. Hopefully the Freestyle with its 128ch ability will rise from the grave.

I too hope the Freestyle comes back. But worst case is I order enough regular Lynx boxes to compensate and just abort the little SSR's. I think we could easily offload the current parts/boards we have to another member who is still going with that method of control (or just save it for next year). However, if the free-style doesn't come back by RJ you could do a grinch with a DMX/usb converter? Similar result.
wbuehler
01-31-2008, 12:20 PM
Very true I need some SSR's as my Grinch with the DMX adapter will control LED strobes.
But the rest of the parts can be used on other controllers or held onto for later use. I may still use them yet as I am currently leaning towards the new Ren64 that is in beta along with the new firmware that allows the Renards to speak DMX. After reading some new posts it looks like the Freestyle will not be returing from the grave.

Bill,
sounds like you and i are on similar journeys - i too am starting out this year and was looking forward to the freestyle and have settled on DMX, looks like the Renard with DMX will be my choice now.
My journey is taking a different track though in that i am putting together all my light strings and displays first then determining the number of channels - this gives me a little time to see how the controllers pan out over the next couple of months.
good luck and it is good to follow your trail

18 March 2008 Well I made a big purchase today. With the help of others (tstewart had all the links and shared them with me) I finally for the first time have purchased an actual soldering station. I know that for some this might not seem big but for me who has alwys used the Radio Shack models it will be nice to use this upgrade. This station is for Lead Free soldering not sure if it is any different or not from a normal station but Lead Free is the way in which it is all headed. I like tstewart have kids in the house. I also have pets that like to take off with items and chew on them.

I just bought one of those for the garage. It works great. The lead-free models have a quicker recovery time and keep a very constant temperature. You can still use leaded solder with it. Did you notice how quick it heats up? That beep that you hear when you turn it on is when it reaches the set temperature. Only about a second...that's quick!.

06 April 2008 ******Big Update*********
Got three items assembled and tested today
1. Lynx USB DMX Dongle
2. DMX to Grinch converter
3. Grinch
4. Tested RGB Pixel
5. Used and tested CSI soldering station
Well first let me say that I love the CSI soldering station. It heats in seconds and works great. It taks a bit of practice for lead free soldering but I can suggest the following that may help for those who have not done it before.
1. Lead free takes a bit longer to start flowing than lead solder.
2. Have a good light source were you are going to work.
3. When set lead free solder joints will look dull and not shiny.
4. When you set up your plugin make sure that you assign all 512 channels to the Entec Pro. I wasted some time and the time of others to find out that I forgot to check this setting.
Below you will see some assembly pictures.

08 April 2008 In an effort to make the Video's more friendly to all types of internet connections I downloaded VirtualDub and the Divx Codec. This allowed me to remove the audio and compress the file using Divx. The file size for the 6 Channel Epoxy star dropped from 15MB down to 1.5MB. I have uploaded the smaller one and replaced the larger one.
This shold hopefully help. Please note that you will need the Divx Codec to play the file.
The can be downloaded from

Maybe but I went with Divx because is pretty much a compression standard for an .avi file and it has been in use for years.

10 April 2008 Deceided to build another star last night and try the cooking spray on the foil that I had suggested in the write up. I did my first star and ran into problems getting the foil to come off in some spots which is why in the writeup I suggested that cooking spray be used to coat the foil star first. Well last night it occured to me that I needed to test this method and finish building some more stars at the same time.
Well I am happy to report that it worked like a champ. I was able once the EPOXY dried to actually peel the entire foil star off without even tearing it. You will notice in the following pics that this star does not look as clear as the 1st. This is because this pour was a bit thicker which leads to the epoxy not being as clear. You have to remember that this stuff is meant to cover wood products in which the EPOXY will be a thin coat compaired to the thickness of the star. One way to couter this is to slightly push down on the foil star so that it streaches out making the thickness drop. I'll be doing a 3rd star tonight and will post what it looks like when you flatten the foil star out first.

Bill, I am loving your "play by play" I am currently in the process of trying to slowly wrap my hands around all of the technical electronics to get a true understanding of what I have built and also the new pieces I am going to attempt to build. I have been playing with the Express PCB just to draw a diagram of the connection for the LED's to see if I have this small piece understood correctly (baby steps). I have my 595 up and running and enjoyed it last Christmas but Strobes are one thing I would like to add. With extra channels I can certainly accomplish your solution. Take a look and see if this is the correct way to wire them up based on the Grinch or Olsen 595 outputs.

Hello Sig I am glad that you like the Journey. For my strobes I just terminate the Lan cable with a standard RJ45 jack and then plug directly into the Grinch with no resistor. Yes normally it is not good to run an LED with no resisitor but remember for strobes you are running the LED for only 25ms pulses.
I am working on some Epoxy stars that use colored LED's I'll get some videos posted as soon as I can.

Wayne, Thanks for the link. I guess I misunderstood what the controllers were doing. The signals being sent by the controller is not the +5? I am glad I posted the question now. So if I understand correctly then the controller opens up the negative and the positive source is always present on pin 1?
Again thanks to everyone I hope to be able to contribute knowledge at some point and not just leach it out of others.

Was that really a test or was the cat just batting the light connection? :p

No it was a real test. If the cat you see in the video would bite the wire then the lights would not light at all. You see she is a old cat and it takes a lot of power to get her up and moving so there would not be enough to power both her and the lights. :)

03 June 2008 Hello All
Well some of you may remember that some time ago I said that I was planning on doing something that most people would consider nuts, stupid, and even a waste of money. Well I am happy to report that the ideal arrived today. See the attached pic. I like to think of it as getting the word out.

15 June 2008 Hello All. Well I had one user tell me that they were getting power cords from Big Lots. Since I still needed quite a bit of them I decided to check them out today. Well I am happy to report that Big Lots had a bunch of these cords left. If you are loacted in Charlotte, Kannapolis, or Concord North Carolina the Big Lots in Concord still has a bunch on the shelf.
I was able to score the following
22 6' cords for $1.20 each
12 15' cords for $2.70 each
28 9' cords for $1.50 each

I'd been looking at the chords at Big Lots a few weeks back, and thought they were all $3.00 each on clearance. After reading this I went back and to discover that it was just the plastic containers that they were using to hold them which were on clearance, but the way the label was on there, it looked like it was the price for the chords. Thanks for posting the good info Bill.

Hey Bill,
Just got my PicKit2 today and stumbled onto this procedure (minus the options you mentioned,.. thankyou) but I wasn't sure that this was correct. Now that I've seen your little video, I'm sure it'll work. I had suspected that I may not need the MPLAB software. One question, I'm a little apprehensive to remove the PIC with power on. How do you handle this? I don't have an appropriate chip removal tool yet and am just carefully using a tweeker. (long skinny screw driver.) Not to worried, I do it in the field all the time but never with power on.
Leon
EDIT - Nevermind, after programming all 16 PICs tonight I think I've answered my own question. Let me guess, you don't have the PicKit2 starter kit but instead bought the programming board off ebay. This low count demo board that came with the starter kit is just retarded. Well thats a bit harsh. It has a regular IC socket which would work great if you only had one PIC to program and your done.

I have been working on finishing the tinning of the extension cords that will connect to the SSR4
They are now complete and ready to be attached.

Are those controllers screwed flat to the wood? It is hard to tell in the image. If they are, I would give yourself an airgap under there. It doesn't need much. It looks like a piece of scrap laminate or such, but still. If you get moisture in there you could get a short, arcing or worse, like high voltage finding its way to the low voltage.

Parts Sorting Update for Lynx Express
I spent all day Sunday sorting and packing parts. I do have to say that sorting the resistors is the worst part of it all. Let me tell you that this bad boy does use some resistors.

As you can see with each Fill Kit or Parts Only kit you will receive one ESD parts bag and one plastic parts bag.
I am short some parts that I will order from Mouser today. This should not cause any delays as I am still awaiting the cases and PCB's to arrive.

You are close, you have the +5 on the wrong pin, and no resistor. Just follow the directions I layed out here.....

Hey Wayne,
Sorry to dig up this old post. I'm currently trying to build some LED strobes and saw this. I was going to use this method and run them without resistors but I do have them and am now planning on caution as to not risk a pre-mature death  I saw you how to here and was wondering, ... My leds came with resistors, (one for each LED) According to your how to, is it safe to assume that I only need one resistor if the anode are all tied (common) as in your layout? Or if I do this do I need to refigure resistor value? LEDS are 140K, and 255K with matching resistors sent via e-bay seller. Obviously, I know I can't mix and match on same circuit and these are being used with Grinch.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Leon, it would be best to use a resistor per each LED. With the tester, it is just to tell if you are getting an output from the controller, so LED brightness is not an issue (for me anyways) With the 4 LEDs on the tester sharing the same voltage on one resistor, what happens is when only one is on, it is at full brightness, then when a second, third, and fourth come on, they get dimmer. This is not a good thing for what you will be doing, as would think you will want all the LEDs to be at full brighness no matter how many you have on.

Worked on the following items this weekend.
1. Main Tree Pole
2. Lynx Controller
3. LE Controllers
4. Main Tree Topper that will be lighted with 4 RGB Pixels
On one of the LE's you will see that I did a different kind of jumper so it will run on one plug. I used a spare piece of lamp cord and just jumped from one input to the other. This was the jumper can be removed for future use if the current requirement exceeds 20 Amps.

Did some work on the Main Tree topper. What you will see in the pictures is 4 pixels that have been attched in two's back to back with a small bit of insulator between them.
I found that by using an old drinking cup that it fit the opening of the globe nicely and held the groups of two pixels in a mickey mouse ear formation. The globle has been attched to the top tree flange with a bead of silicione.

Well the sign did not look right from certain angles when viewing from the street so we changed things up a bit.
We settled on a single 150Watt flodd light mounted under the sign facing straight up. Doing this allowed the sign to be viewed quite well from the street and from all angles.
I also took a picture to show the full sign base.

Well my show will run until the new year but I guess for this year this journey has come to an end. I have learned a lot this year and had some set backs but was able to put on what I hope was a nice show.
I have had the pleasure of talking with many old timers in this hobby and many noobs like myself. I would like to thank everyone that help me along the way to my first years show.
I have some things that I have learned that I would like to share below.
1. Start your planning now. Get an ideal of what you would like to do now and start your needs planning based on the type of show that you would like to have.
2. Remember things do change. If you are just starting out and have your game plan finished you may want to hold off a bit before you start to order hardware. Each year brings new designs and enchancments so my waiting a liitle now may put you in a better setup later.
3. Have a backup plan. I faced an issue this year were a piece of hardware that was planned for release do not come to pass and that meant some replanning on my part.
4. Do not be afraid to ask questions. No matter what type of hardware you choose if you have questions post them, enter the chat room, read the wiki or PM them. The only stupid question you can ask is the one that you do not ask.
5. Do not underestimate the amount of time you will need to get your diplay setup. It will take longer than you think. If this is your first animated display give yourself plenty of time to get your controllers built and tested. Also give yourself extra setup time in the yard. If you can start by installing stakes, support rings for tree lights...etc... weeks before hand. This will help with your deployment so you can go live by your target date.
6. If you will be using Vixen to run your show download it and start playing with it now. This will prepare you for sequencing later on.
7. Have fun if you find that your setup seems to be more of a chore than a hobby take a small break and regroup.
I would like to say a special thanks to Brian (Macrosill) and RJ for the forums that they run. They maintian these forums for free and do not ask for anything in return. Without these two sites I would not have gotten the inforamtion that I needed to begin this very addicative hobby.
There is another WayneJ. Wayne it was your display that I read about in the online paper back in December of 2007. In this article it talked about your display and had links to the videos and a link to Cristmasinsherly the rest is history.
And Yes I have started plans for 2009.

Bill,
The reason some people are having difficulty seeing the videos you embedded into the post is because you have included the embed code from youtube inside the youtube bb tags. I have edited post 223 on page 23, it has a single video in it. If you click edit for that post you will see the only thing between the youtube tags is the file name, a string of about 9 characters. If you go in and adjust the other posts everyone will see all the videos without issue.
Here is a post I made about embedding youtube videos : http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2465&highlight=embed+youtube
btw, nice job!
