Up until this point I have soldered all my opto isolators directly without sockets with no problems.

But it occured to me if I used sockets on only some of of my Ren16s I could swap out the MOC3023(random crossing) for a MOC3033(zero crossing).

If I swapped out to a zero-crossing opto with the PWM code would I get the equivalent of a commercial hockey puck SSR? Less the snubber circuit of course.

Would the zero-crossing configuration be safe for non incandescent/non LED loads? IE strobes, inflatable fans, or anything else that fits into the "if you dim it' it will die" category?

This is not as crazy as some of my suggestions.

Just wanted to know if switching to a zero crossing optoissolator in an SSR would provide a true on off switch that would not burn out electronic devices.
