when doing lightning effects, do you use cool white leds, warm white leds, other sources?

For things like snow and ice, I prefer the cool white. But, where I want to mimic incans, I use warm white. It really depends on personal preference.

I've been known to use a mix of both warm and cool white; usually every other LED so it blends nice. I think it gives more a natural look when projected onto the right surface, but that's just a matter of opinion.

Nothing can beat the look and effect of a neon stobe for this !

Neon? Xenon perhaps?

Lightning tends to be on the cool side.

on stage (i have many years doing sfx for theater) we always used XENON strobes followed by a pulse of diffused pale orange or steel blue. when this is done with a light fog, produces a great effect.

the "pulse" is set to respond to light (via light sensor) and thunder clap is achieved by a sheet of 12g steel hanging on a trellis by chain (2 points). there is a grip (stage hand) that will strike the steel with a rubberized (padded) dead blow hammer.

i wish i had pics - but if you were ever in or around KBF (Knotts Berry Farm) between 1991-1997 and went to the haunt you saw my effects with Elvira, and probably my redesigned hanging :)

Anybody have any lightning sequences they would be willing to share?

Thanks,
Brian

I've got one with audio, it's in LOR S2 format, do you want it converted to Vixen.

Cool white, over 7000k if you can help it.
That is why we created our 8000k cool white led bulbs, for thunder and lightning effects.
but I like them for lighting too.

Building a simple color organ with an audio input makes for a great effect

Maybe we could get Phil involved in this one and in no time, there'd be firmware for a pic-controlled van De Graff generator -- and REAL LIGHTNING!!!
