Hi:
My wife's cousins' house was destroyed in that tornado in Joplin. So was her sons' house. Luckily, no one was hurt. Her cousin was in the hospital in Springfield, MO. I don't know where her son was when it struck.
We had been to the house last summer, but her cousin was not there at the time.
Earlier this morning, communication into Joplin was very difficult. My wife was unable to contact anyone there, but her brother, who lives near Kansas City, MO. had been able to contact some of the family members in that area.
UPDATE: I made an error. It was not my wifes cousins son, but her nephew who lost his house, too. He lived not too far from his aunts' house. He is being helped and cared for by other relatives in the area.

While the Alabama tornadoes were certainly just as horrific. I can't remember seeing utter devastation like the path in Joplin. They are saying a 1/3 of the City structures are destroyed. It looks like Heroshima. Also, I have never seen a hospital destroyed and that just makes it even more difficult. For some reason, to me, a hospital seems like a safe place that is almost indestructable. I work at a Hospital Network and we joke about the emails and notices we get for Tornado and Storm warnings. I will never do that again!
My prayers go out to everyone affected!

Hi:
For those interested, my wifes cousins house was located at 26th & Kentucky in Joplin, MO. That is directly NORTHEAST of the destroyed St. Johns hospital. This is the classic SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST tornado path and is why people are told to go to the SOUTHWEST corner of the basement, if you have one.
Do a Google Map search for 2616 Kentucky, Joplin, MO. The house was the third one on the WEST side of street, SOUTH of 26th. By locating that address and then the hospital, you can see the path of the tornado.
I was at that house last summer, but didn't get to go in because the cousin was gone.
Edit:Changed location of house from second to third house.

We have been in St Johns hospital in Joplin for over a week with my brother in law and mother in law I had just went home to clean up and return for the night so my wife could go home and get some sleep. When I got out of the shower I discovered the hospital was hit bad and my wife called and said they were ok but watched people gettining sucked out of the windows from the hallways. Our family survived without a scratch except my brother in law who had a stroke and we were wating on him to pass before the tornado. The Lord protected my familiy so they could assist with all the patients and injured getting them evacuated. My Tahoe was still in the parking lot and I found it about a 1/4 mile to the north rolled in a ball. All of my LED triks boards, triks c, 4000 leds, all the components and boards that i had bought for this years display addition, most of my refrigeration tools laptop with all my information were also in the tahoe. They can be replaced many people lost things that can never be replaced. Remeber the Thousands of people that are homeless and in shelters in your prayers form the days to come. I am so thankful for the protection given to our family. I live in Jasper about 25 miles north east of joplin. My life will return to normal theirs will be changed forever.

Hi:
We thank the Good Lord for your families safety. What an experience! I have never been in a tornado, but I worked the Ruskin Heights Tornado (http://ruskinheightstornado.arctecowl.com/) in 1957, helping to supply communications as a ham radio operator. The devastation and injuries were unbelievable. I spent many hours in the region, mostly at first aid stations, but I can still see the destruction when I think about it.
It is a strange fact that the two most deadly tornados in Missouri occurred on May 20 and May 21, 1 day and 54 years apart.
There are many tales that can be told about survival and what happened in a tornado, but it has to be seen to be appreciated. If that is the word. I'm not sure it is.
Again, Thank GOD you and your family are OK.

Hi:
'Tis better to spend two hours underground than eternity looking up at grass roots".
(Wise old saying I just thought up.)

I won't be looking at roots. I'll be looking at gold.
