Hi there. I tried to figure this programming out by watching the videos here:
http://www.doityourselfchristmas.com/wiki/index.php?title=WayneJ%27s_video_series_on_PIC_pro gramming
and reading the Wiki but I'm getting an error that asks me to verify the PIC 16F688 is correctly installed.
I'm using a PICkit2 and a Joshua ZIF, pictures attached to show my setup. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks
PS. The picture does not show it but I did install the jumpers on all of the "C" pins for the ICSP14 Adapter.

did you install the jumpers on your Ji.SYS PIC board? there are some that need to be installed to be able to comunicate with the chip. should be instructions that tell which letter should be jumpered.

You need jumpers on all 5 pins labeled BC

Yes, all of the "C" pins have a "B" above the C for a total of 5 jumpers on the "B-C" pins. I called them the "C" pins as they are labeled as: "Group C ‐ 14 pin VPP=4, VDD=1, VSS=14, PGD=13, PGC=12; PIC16F505, PIC16F506, PIC16F526, PIC16F610, PIC16F616, PIC16F630, PIC16F636, PIC16F676, PIC16F684, PIC16F688, PIC16HV610, PIC16HV616" in the ICSP™ Adapters Instruction Manual. Thank you for the Wiki link, I did not find that one. The most obvious Wiki link is "WayneJ's video series on PIC programming". I will look at your "Programming the PIC16F688" link and post an update.

I followed the steps in the "Programming the PIC16F688" link and got the same error message (see the picture: Pic-Error-1.JPG in my first post) during several of the steps.
Update.......... I just tried again but...
I noticed on the first page of your file that you had the PICkit plugged directly to the board. I was using the attachment cable that came with the unit. On a whim I ditched the cable and plugged directly to the board and it did recognize the micro chip. The programming worked, per the MPLAB message. Now I need to program the rest of the chips and see if the RenXC64 I built works.
Big thanks for your help!

Good to see it worked out.
If you want to try your cable again, it looks in the cable was not correctly oriented. Looks like the green wire goes from the arrow (Pin 1) on the PICKIT2 but doesn't go to the arrow on the programming board. Try swapping the cable around on the programming board, unless you tried it already.

I was wondering about that but, as the unit is new, I figured the labels on the cable were correct (kind of like a cross over cable). On the Male end the Green wire is VPP/MCLR and on the Female end the Green wire is Aux. So I guess the label on the Female end is on the wrong side of the connector.
