There seems to be an outpouring of assistance with the DIYC Logo. I am attaching the best copy of the logo I have. Should anyone want to play with it please do so and post back your results in this thread.

Does anyone have the vector version of this file? (eps, illustrator, corel) I have the tree part and the logo with the words going around the tree, but I do not have this version.

That would help us to be able to create the best one.

Brian,

Is this to just touch-up the design in place or is this open to suggestions to re-create or re-design a new logo? Just curious, thanks!

Awesome, sounds fun!

I hacked up an SVG version in Inkscape of the image Brian posted.
It's not perfect, but I hope it helps the more artistic folks (not me, lol).

I did a couple font treatments on the logo to modernize it a bit. I didn't want to lose the tree graphic as I think it is the diyc brand of sorts. I am also attaching a screenshot of what the logo would look like in white on the forum. Let me know what you think.

*Edit: I have also uploaded the tree vector I created for use

I could not agree more about the colors! Green and Red on Blue are a bit tricky. You could always slap the logo on a sticker... see the attached image.

I never had one.

The original logo was designed by Ingrid, Toodles Pipsky, and was provided as a .gif, iirc.

I like both of the last entries - my only comment is that they should have some reference to lighting as well like the old logo by adding some colored lights/bulbs on it here and there. Just my .02... Great job either way!

Right you are Tyler. I must have missed that will all my font treatment madness. I would like to submit one more before I give it a rest. This one has a few additional elements that I think needed to be incorporated back in.

Hi:
I like the last one by jhartley: diyc_logo_lights.jpg, but I think if the "Christmas.com" was in a bolder font, it would look better.

All of the designs are great. I wouldn't know which one to vote for. I feel strongly all ways.

It just keeps getting better Brian!
The last is the best so far, with your sticker idea it would work on any background.

If I may make a suggestion...

Can the extension cord under Christmas have a few more lights like a string of lights before it terminates into an extension cord?

Great Job, keep up the good work!

Macrosill
04-10-2011, 02:03 PM
All of these are looking awesome. I think a vote is the only way to pick one because I certainly not choose just one. I would ask that anyone that is serious about their design to be willing to provide it to DIYC for its own use without any copyright limitations and be willing to provide it in multiple formats, like jpg and svg as examples. Also that is can be designed as a "sticker" and a version with no background.

Sound good? I hope what I wrote makes sense to other besides me. LOL

OK, here's my idea. Colored lights in the tree and spotlights in front of the words somehow illuminating the words with colorful beams of light...

WARNING: The image you are about to see may be disturbing to graphics experts. This is just for reference only and not intended to impress.

kychristmas
04-11-2011, 05:07 PM
Warning, Opinion on its way...

While I do like most of the images presented, I believe the logo needs to be clean and easy to read. More so, it needs to be easily used in many different formats without modification. Its also nice to limit the colors so that it looks good in B&W or single color formats without having to resort to shades of gray. Adding a great deal of detail, shadows and shading is an issue. While I am not a graphics expert or an artist, I do know a great deal about Logo design and theories behind it.

That said, no matter what we end up with, the creator has to agree to no ownership claims and provide the image in both Vector and Bitmap formats to Brian to distribute as he see's necessary. For instance, I used the old logos to create outline version of the logo. I received them from someone else and they have been used in cutting vinyls for Tune-to signs as well as PCB Silkscreens. This absolutely needs to continue.

Rather than creating "Sticker" versions, simply create them with a nice anti-aliasing and transaparencies and save them in a png format. While you may have issues in IE 6.x versions, it is an accepted format now.

On a related note...
I had offered to re-skin the site for Brian. Unfortunately, I lost access to a development VBulletin site where I could work on creating and testing custom skins. Does anyone have access to a development/testing license?

boyelroy11
04-11-2011, 05:58 PM
Agreed. Also, the "tree" portion of the logo has become an unofficial "trademark" or "code symbol" for this site and its members. Like Kelly, I also use it on my signage, and feel like it tells anyone that is familiar with this site that I am a member when they see it. I would like to see the tree remain unmolested.

Bruce

My .02-
I like the look of jhartley's version http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10090&d=1302378064 because the bulbs look loose to me, and that suggests a DIY project atmosphere (spare parts laying around as opposed to a finished string).

I think we should also have an Icon that can stand on its own that says ‘Do It Yourself Christmas’ without actually spelling it out.

Brian and I have been talking about me working on the the site Skin. I'll keep looking at ideas, but I was just getting ready to tell him that I think it's pretty good. I have some mockups to share with him, but I'll let him look at them first. They are all pretty subtle changes.

Sometimes, you really have to go with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach
